CFL, 150, or 250 hps?

Interesting, this is the first I've heard of these bulbs. From what I've read I understand they will work for both veg and flowering? Do they run cooler than an hps? Would you recommend 150 or 250w for the space I'm growing in?

check my signature.... page #9 post #86. that plant is grown under 250W High Pressure Sodium from day 10 since sprout.before that 10 days of fluros just for starting :D

A watt is a measurement of radiant energy (heat). 250w from an HID is the same as 250w from a CFL.

ok well... that being said... cfls distribute less intense heat due to more surface area... but like said they distribute the same amount of heat... diffrence is hps put out ALOT more lumens then cfls... very high efficiency... so if i were you i would pick up a 250 watt hps... and if heat is an issue a cooltube should help alot... ive herd plants can touch them without a problem... and im talking 400 watt cooltube... so 250 should be nothing... also note i am using cfls now.... and i am planning on picking up the same thing.. a 250 watt cooltube also my space is alot shorter then urs... about 36'' height 40'' w and 20'' deep .. as for how many plants u can fit.... thats ur call on how big u want them.... i would just grab a bunch of 2 gal pots and see how many u can fit in ur spot..... and if u can fit 6 pots in the space... then plant 9-10 seeds... that way if u get males u will still use ur space efficiently... and worse comes to worse u get TOO many females.... and thats a good problem...

Ok I guess I'll go with the 250w cooltube. Any other opinions on these CMH (ceramic metal halide) bulbs? Some people over at icmag.com swear by them. They supposedly give out less lumens than the hps but the spectrum is better. They run on a standard hps ballast (not the digital ones though).

OSHiT - Yeah I'm got pretty good height in my space, but the width and depth are not much unfortunately. It had to be that way to fit the thing in my closet.

LUMENS PLAY NO ROLE IN THE GROWTH OF PLANTS! I would advise you to bone up on par watts or photosynthetically active radiation.

basicly userfriendly is alot smarter then all of us.... saying watts/lumens have nothing to do with plant growth is technically correct... but from your standpoint its useless to think that... unless u plan on learning as much as he knows.... if you want the simplest fastest solution do what u were doing.... the light you want is good and will do the job ...his may be better.....but from a general standpoint a light with more lumens/watts will produce more growth....

and to keep myself arguement free please note that i am not diss'ing anything anyone is saying

no prob. But when one says something like that, you need to back it up a little. Even with just a brief reason why. Just saying lumens mean nothing to a plant, has no value.
