question about lighting

this is my first grow and plant are about a foot tall (14 of them) the guy at my local grow store says 1 1000 watt light is enought and at the most 2. i have read some post on here where people have a 1000 watt light per plant. any thoughts on this. is the yield worth the extra money i will spen on 4 or 5 lights?

yes ,if you want to get max professional results, go with 600 watt hps systems, you get more lumuns per watt consumption,, 4 six hundred hps will do for budding these many plants if you keep them at a smallish size , , You can realisticly obtain 2 oz per plant, this will vary,, personally i would go with a few less plants and shoot for 3 or4 oz per, when you get more grow time experience you will obtain better results, anyway, go with 600 watt systems unless u get an extrmrly good deal on the 1 k lights, and this is not to mention the vegging arrangement...oh i forgot to say that if your hydro guy hasnt told u this u cant trust him...dont buy his 1k systems he cant sell to anyone else...the 6oo hps is a known superior light to the 1000k systems...more light for power consumed..

You probably told him the area size, you were growing in which you failed to tell us. Which would help us.
When considering 1000 watt light you also have to think about the temps. day temp between 70 to 85, 75 the best. Night temp 65.
So you can go from there. Then you need to go to a lighting chart to see the lumen's difference between the 400 watt, 600 watt and 1000 watt and figure this out. You have got some reading to do. I know homework!

Depends on how big you are going to let them get before flowering?
What size pots?
How big is the space?
