a question about lighting

ok i have 14 female about 1 foot high. the guy at my local grow store said i only need 1 1000 watt light at the most 2. however i have read many posts from people on this site saying they would use double or triple the amount of lights one thread in partucular a guy said he had 12 plants and 1 1000 watt light for each one). is this ok and if so is it worth it? thanks
