Spring fishing

I live in the northeast and i'm wondering if anyone has been out fishing. In my neck of the woods we mainly fish for brook trout and landlocked salmon. I caught a couple brookies in a brook about 6 feet wide behind my house. The smelts are starting to run so the salmon should be here soon. Anyone else been fishing? Post some pics or tell us what you've caught. All fishing stories welcome freshwater and saltwater.

Nice lookin brookies there dozer!! Im in Michigan and our inland trout season starts the 28th. The steelhead fishing is on in full force though and I'm hoping to get away this weekend for at least a day trip. I would say I will post pictures but it is called fishing and not catching for a reason, so we will have to wait and see. We also do alot of walleye fishing here as they are plentiful and so tasty. Walleye season also opens up the 28th for inland waters and on opening weekend it's like bumper boats on every river. Hope to have some pics to post. Tight lines and screaming reels to ya! :bigjoint:

We're getting ready to start trolling and jigging blade baits on Lake Erie in Michigan, Canadian waters, and Ohio waters. The jigging in the Detroit River has been hit and miss, with the early warm water causing a run before anyone was ready LOL. We're gonna hit it hard this weekend, so pics on Monday if Mother Nature would just friggin' work for us on a weekend. Too much rain and crazy wind. The bluegills will be spawing soon, and that's a limit fest every day.

I can't wait! Thanks for making a great thread, a lot of people from other counties don't get to enjoy the fishing like we do.

Lovely looking fish :)

Just wondering how fishing works in the US, do you need permits and rod licenses? Or can you just rock up and cast your line? In the UK it's a joke, the notion of being given a fine for trying to catch a fish is ridiculous!

It costs me about 30 bucks to get a fishing licence, its good for 1 year and the proceeds (so they say) go to helping stock the local rivers and lakes.

you dont want to get caught fishing without a licence they can give you a massive fine and even take your posessions.

Licenses are a huge deal here. You need one for each State. My restricted license is $15, I have to add to it to fish for salmon and trout. Out of State are real expensive, and my Canadian license is $78, plus their "sportsman card" which costs more money, but is good for a few years. I spend big money on licenses, but all of it goes back to the States for the DNR, and MNR in Canada.

I got busted ice fishing once, in a place you have to take a boat to get to the ice, and was 100 ft inside Canadian waters. The guy actually pulled out a GPS and showed me the line of their waters when I told him he was in the wrong country to give me a ticket. He was cool, didn't take my perch, which I kept pulling in as he and I talked LOL. He could have taken everything, all my gear, which is worth many thousands of dollars, we're very serious about hard and warm water fishing.

The ticket was $150, and I had to buy their license too. Expensive mistake, won't do that again. It was innocent, I thought I was in the US.

30 bucks seems reasonable, in the Uk it's £72 for a rod license, and then most places worth fishing require you to pay for a permit to fish there as well. I have no issue with paying for a license if i'm keeping everything i catch, but 99.99% of the time i'm just catch-and-release fishing.

edit: I just had a look at the prices for the local fishing areas, for a season permit, it will cost me £700 plus my rod license, or if i can't afford that then it is £20 per day.

It seems like there are lot's of fisherman from the Michigan area. I am sure when the weather sucks up that way it must be pretty tough going trying to fish. The payoff must be great. Heard you guys catch some monsters up there. I am in Maine and Sebago Lake is the place I go to troll for landlocked salmon. The U.S. record salmon was caught here but, long ago. Once in a while we catch 5-8 lb fish. Funny though, most times they are only in 5 ft of water in the spring. We also have Rapid River fly fishing only catch and release only. The native brookies get up to 8lbs. My best is a 21 inch 5 lbs. The color on these fish is amazing. The salmon up there can get up to 10lbs. Good luck everyone. Oh yeah as far as paying for a license it doesn't bother me cause it's going right back into the stocking programs. Most fish I throw back anyway I just keep a couple in the spring to enjoy.

Now that would suck! Simple enough mistake. One would of thought the warden would of cut you some slack. Around here the wardens don't fuck around if they catch you doing illegal fishing they can take all your gear and your vehicle if they want to be pricks. Most don't though, it depends on how serious of an offense. I make sure I read the lawbook when fishing in new spots.

....I never had the chance to use my ice gear this year ...we have a small 5 acre lake out back thats full of pike... it's just a bitch to get on in the summer... everything is swamp around it.
But I'm slowly making a path/ rv trail to it.
There's little bluegill in the pond though.... lol.... the kids can fish all day!

Looks like an awesome spot to grow. How big do the pike get? We have a few places around here with them. They are some agressive fish. I use wire leaders when fishing for them. They eat everything. My buddy got one last winter ice fishing over 34inches and it had a 10inch brook trout in his belly. We kill them off in the lakes where there are trout and salmon.

fellow Mainard :) weather is starting to get nice around these parts, gotta get my licence soon. I usually stay close to home to fish, i think i took my boat out to Sebago lake once a few summers ago and almost took my whole prop and lower unit of my motor (was a inboard motor) on a shallow spot i went screaming across. coaught a few white perch that day but nothing great.
