I think you have Nixon and Johnson mixed up. Johnson's social program "The Great Society" brought about massive deficits and the highest interest rates of that century. Nixon ended the Vietnam war and brought down inflation. He wasn't a great president by all means, on the other hand, he wasn't a total failure either. His only downfall was, he got caught doing what all politicians do, lie, cheat and steal.

Nixon took us off the Gold Standard.

Nixon opened China and thus drove a wedge against Russia. There is a very good set of reasons that we float currency today, and the agreement was on his watch. So, that's good. Trying hold a currency against a gold standard would have really screwed us in oil crisis and would have ceeded too much to Russian gold.

Are you saying you believe it is better for our nation and people to have nothing backing our paper? Or in fact, not all our so called wealth is even in paper form it is on computers it doesn't exist anywhere but in cyberspace and I for one would prefer to have something of actual value.
