Flowering yields....Less Large plants or More small plants?

  • For those of you who have done this test side by side what has been your conclusion for yield? Utilizing your lights and growing just small plants with 1-2 large Colas that were vegged for 1-2 weeks or growing less plants but huge plants vegged for 5-8 weeks and have multiple colas?

I go back and forth with my thought process on this and was curious what others have found. I think the more cycles I turn the more I think more plants, smaller allows me to flip faster and get patients and myself our meds faster.

I just did some math an I think I agree. If your using the same amount of light per ft2 in the same amount of space for flowering. You'd end up with around the same amount, at least according to 1 and 2 month vegs indoor. In my experience most wont even start flowering until 3-4 weeks no matter what I do so I don't start flowering until week 3-4. Also it would save veg space and energy since they aren't as big in veg. So I think its about the same yield, but you save on space and energy costs.

I heard some people start on 12/12. Their's a guy in here who does it and has badass plants.

I would go for fewer larger plants, simply for the reason that less plants means less jail time if you're caught... or if you have a mmj card, you can grow more while staying under your limit. I tried growing 4 plants and then 1 plant in the same space and got similar yields.

both methods can give you the same yield.

SOG with lots of small plants will give you more yield over the same amount of time.

Few bigger plants is safer for legal reasons

i have done big sogs with bigger plants you must remember you only really get to harvest 1/2 of plant other buds end up as fluff and shake
By growing less plant but vegging them bigger pretty much is like 10 - 20 plants in comparison specially in scrog style grows
so imo if you can don;t mess around do scrog for maximum yield like this 5 plant 5 - 6 pound harvest :)

smaller plants with less veg time = win on electric, saves money on nutrients , don't have to lollypop as much and imo your plants will be smaller and the nugs will connect and Possibly fill out more. Fuck vegging for 3 weeks to 1 month !

I will admit though Dr.Greener does have some nice looking nuggies !! good job man

i also do this. i do it as a perpetual grow. i grow 8 plants max at a time of all different ages usually 2 weeks between each plant. by starting a new plant every 1 weeks or so and growing 12/12 from a seed i can harvest a plant every 7-14 days usually. getting about 2 oz per plant. plenty for me and a couple friends and i get fresh new stuff every other week :)

but this is a nortorious question asked many of time. to grow a couple big plants or a lot of small plants?

well it depends on your situation. i personally like growing more small plants. you can grow more, faster, and have less chance for the plants to start having issues.
1 downside to this is initial cost is more. more pots/bigger hydro unit, more soil/medium, more water and nutes used, etc.

Coco beds is what im doing now. Using Concrete mixing tubs and 8 plants in each. Can fit 16 plants under a 1000 watt that way. My limit is 60 so im totally good at this point and still under that number. We will see how it goes.

I've oo'd and ah'd over the same question.

I found myself unconsciously meeting in the middle. Currently growing about 12 different plants, in different stages, and have given myself a personal limit of 12 plants (4 rows x 3 rows). From now on, I will plant more seeds every 2-3 weeks after each existing plant is harvested. I consider this a perpetual harvest, as fresh plants are already established/growing as its elder is completed, and the cycle goes on, like a conveyor belt. Its not a true SOG, nor is it pure large plants, its all 3 stages and cyclic. In theory anyway.

I limited to 12 plants as obviously the more plants the harder it is to justify, also its about my current limit of practicality. I'd rather focus on these 12 in a confident setup, than 24 plants in a half assed struggle etc. Greed has a lot to answer for, so I try to balance risk/reward.
