Not saying that you are racist but "african american" sounds so much worse than "black" imo. I think in an effort to "not sound racist" African American and Native American are both racist terms by trying to use correct terms "white america" has come up with new racist (less hurtful sounding) terms.

Blacks don't call each other African Americans, they say black (or in less sophisticated circles "Nigga", I feel racist saying african american, like I don't say to my black friends.. "This African American I met today" "I say This black dude I met today" they don't get offended.

i don't know about anyone else, but the term african american drives me completely insane.. first of all, not all black people in america have come from africa..
