Thought crimes?

There was an excellent post in the "flash mob" thread in T&T where one fellow admitted to noticing the ethnic composition of a group in a video. Another replied:
"People would claim that because you noticed is proof of racism. Of course, these people are idiots as well. "

This neatly illustrates what I was kvetching about. I despise actual bigotry, and I also despise springloaded accusation of bigotry where none is definite ... almost as much.

That said, this race <cough!> goes not to the quick but the patient. cn

i aint gonna back down
You have said repeatadly in the past some very prejudicial things
stop saying such stupid shit and i will stop calling you a bigot and a racist

I know you are
you know you are
If you think I have said prejudicial things I have to conclude that you are way too sensitive for this world. I don't have a bigoted, or racist bone in my body.

See while I can see what Chesus is saying I can also agree with desert dude cause I don't think I am a bigot but I still have racial thoughts. I don't discriminate against people generally but there are certain people I have little patience for depending on the situation. We all have our own view on the world and what we think of other people whether we differentiate by sex, money, style, skin, etc, they are just extra words for another human being. So why should it matter either way? Again unless you've got someone spitting slurs in your face I don't think hearing/seeing hints of racism are really worth jumping up about.

I understand what racism is. What I don't get is people who want to make everything about race. I don't give a rat's ass what color you are, if you're an asshole you're an asshole and will be treated as such. Color has nothing to do with it. I'm an equal opportunity bitch.

Precisely. DD is being flayed for calling UB a mudscuttle, if I am following this argument properly. While the term is ugly, it describes a real phenomenon, one that is related to but distinct from the condition of oversensitivity to perceived bigotry. I will not comment on whether or not the characterization is correct, which imo is one of the only viable issues here. (The other has to do with the inherent offensiveness of the term.) But calling someone (in effect) a racist is not in itself a racist act. It's being treated as such however, and I see there a victory of emotion over reason. My opinion. cn

Hey no crime in a bunch of white hooded people burning a cross in front of your home if your a black person and yelling "hey nigger time to move" right?
That isnt a hate crime,,,right?
I think that would be horrible to do and to experience. No doubt the motivation for it is based in ignorance.

A question first though....Were the idiots burning a cross on the intended victims property ? What if any is the definable harm and how should a person be restituted if they suffered no physical damage to their property, their body etc. ? Which other limitations would you place on free speech, albeit even generally agreed assinine "free speech" ?

I think canndo explained it well

Rob Roy is trying to say
hate crimes have unnessary punishments
I disagree
If you want to put it in context
Why is it assault on a police officer has more punishment than simple assault?

If you want to put into context, you might state what you think and leave what I think up to me.

I think racism is pretty dumb. I think preferential treatment for any "class" of people, white, black, gay, police is dumb too. I have a son that is gay. If somebody were to beat him because they don't like gays, the beating is the definable and restitutable harm. The not liking him because he's gay may be steeped in ignorance, but when we add "extra penalties" for thoughts it is a very slippery slope. Cops ? Extra rights ? That's funny...no really it is.

What extra rights do gays and minorities have rob?
Their "extra rights" are implied when government adds an extra penalty when it is determined it is a hate crime.

In my opinion all people should enjoy the same rights, but no extra ones based on sexual orientation, be it hetero, homo or bi, nor should the color of a person's skin give them any additional rights. The idea that murdering a cop is any more heinous than murdering any other person also implies cops have extra rights. I don't believe they should have them.

The law punishes based on intent
And who do you mean by "they"
"They" could just as easily be you

Think we should get rid of manslaughter charges and just arrest everyone on murder? Do people who accidently kill other people
Do they have "extra rights" becuase it was a accident?
