to answer your question on how many lights you need; it really depends on how long you veg them. if you stick them straight into flower now then 18 little clones will do great under one 1000watt hps. as far as ebay goes!!!! BIG NO NO NO if you ask me. i made that same mistake. check it out growace.com they are garbage stuff. they are all over ebay. very very convinsing though. all the warrantys and good reviews and "protection functions" its all bs. go through htgsupply. all of there hps grow lights are good. so cali hydro is another good place to get hps.

HTG is Chinese knock offs for the record. Also I have 2 HTG ballast (digital greenhouse) that are paper weights. Gave up after a few months of trying to get them to warranty them I messed up by not using pay-pal. They just ignored me after they found out it was warranty issues.

Maybe with HTG off of eBay you could leave negative feedback if they break I guess. Good luck and if you go HTG id say go with magnetic ballast not their digital. I dealt with a dude named Tony he was their for the sale but unreachable for the warranty.

I ordered from HTG off of Ebay, and also something else from their store...and when we entered our info on their website some Netherlands crap started emptying our bank account...
I am happy with the light I ordered, and the fan and filter, but it sure was a lot of hassle using their website...with the theft and all that...
So...I would say order from them off of ebay...they make sure nothing is stealing your finance

I got my entry level crap from "Hobby Lights Oneshop" @ ebay.ca...so far so good. I'm looking at them for a tent and ventilation too.

HID is good for 50w/sq ft. Size your grow area, take the sq footage and multiply by at least 50, that'll give you an idea of the wattage you'll want.

Wow, I have a 18 sq' space and I am pretty sure I am nowhere neat 1000watts. Maybe half that, but that's CFL's. Someone told me to shoot for 2000 lumens per plant.

Most ballasts are going to be made in China. A lot of companies will just buy chinesemade gear and rebrand them. A lot of the bigger namebrand digital ballasts should be sealed up to prevent radio interference (lumatek, hydrofarm, nextgen, quantum, etc.)

The cheaper magnetic ballasts will get hot. Like burn-your-hands hot. I would say this is an area where you get what you pay for. Buy a nicer ballast, they should last a long time and the extra 30 to 50 dollars is well worth it. Especially considering the return on investment in this hobby.

As far as how much light you need: The main difference between 600s and 1000s is penetration. If you flower before you plants are around 20" tall, you should get away with 600s no problem. If you're growing trees, you might want 1000s for the extra penetration.

18 plants is too generic of a term to ask how much light you need. You could SOG 25 plants in a 2.5'x2.5' space under a 400w. You could also scrog out your 18 with a month of veg and run 1 plant per 1000w.

So how much wattage you need is really a function of how big your plants are (and will get) and how many plants you have.

I think a ballast it worth the investment in buying from a bigger company. These companies are big enough to offer good warranties and stand behind their products. rasahydroponics.com has good prices and they also have a local store, so if equipment fails you can just bring it in and get a replacement, no questions asked.
