Long hours in a cubicle

i work at a call center where i do roadside assistance for truck drivers. the second i hang up the phone it rings again and i have to say a ridiculously long intro (sometimes over 300 times day) and has become burned into my skull after a year of this place. its a cubicle farm. row after row..

i have to stay seated usually for 4 hour blocks at a time. its so unbelievably repetitive. BUT i get as much OT as i want and take advantage when i can. long days are usually 2pm-6am sometimes i leave earlier.

a few things make life easier.

1. the obvious. loading up on mj. as much as possible. i rarely have to talk to people in person. i get 2 breaks when i work double shifts so i stay high.

2. sometimes i sit on hold for 3-9 minutes and i usually spend that time on these forums on my phone.

3. i picked up the art of pen twirling. i drive people around me crazy dropping it on the keyboard all the time but guess what.. fuck em! ive been spinning for 8 months and im alright. it sucks until you get the fundamental down but stick in there!

thats about all i got... anyone have any tips? besides quitting.. lol i only need to work at this place for maybe 4-7 more months.

btw first thread ive ever started.. WOOHOO! :blsmoke:

I've never had a cubicle job, but yours doesn't sound all that bad. I could deal with the repetitiveness.

i also work in a cube city and without my iphone and pandora i would go crazy. you have the right idea on picking up pen twirling to kill the time. what i started doing was to learn how to write with my left hand since im right hand dominant. it also depends on how much down time you have at your job, it sounds like you're pretty busy with that call volume so your additional activities may be limited.

yea in the winter i get 15 minute idle time in between calls. summer ZILCH.

i also forgot to mention that i used mturk to make additional money in my down time. and chacha.

both the bastards banned me for going WAY too hard lol. mturk i made 340 in 3 weeks only doing it while i was at work. and chacha 260 in 1 week before they banned me haha.

count yourself lucky. my call center has a zero tolerance policy on cell phones. if it is even visible you are subject to immediate termination depending on who catches you, so i can't browse anything on my phone and they have really nanny controls on the internet. for a while i wasn't even able to access cnn.com, but we convinced management that we sometimes have to know the news to build rapport with customers. they took away instant messaging because someone was sexting 2 years ago

some things that entertain me:
i decorate the photos on my calender, play desktop bowling, make post-it sculptures, chat with neighbors, clean my desk/mouse/keyboard etc, draw comics depicting coworkers and customers, fuck with my neighbor's desk when they have a day off, stand up, sit down, rearrange the shit on the wall, make noose out of headset cord, stare at clock, etc.

one of my favorite pastimes is learning to play tunes on the hardphone keypad. i have mary had a little lamb and london bridges perfected so far.

I've worked in that kind of Job before, and yeah, no cell phone use, there was a dress code etc etc. but we could record our greetings so it played automatically when a call rang in, so we didn't have to repeat it every time.

wow i couldn't imagine not being able to drool over grow journals in spare time. they tried a no cell phone policy last year and it didn't go over well. (nobody listened) lol

sexting hahaha. we have an IM but it only lets us speak with other agents in the building. so at least i never have to personally talk to co-workers.

as if the restrictions weren't enough, they have the ability to not only remotely view my monitor, but they can also commandeer my mouse and keyboard. i shit you not one day my arrow started moving, clicked onto a blank email, and the guy typed "this is work related, right?". i responded, "wtf?" and got spoken to about it. you don't even want to know about the attendance policy.

dang. i guess i am luckier than i thought. half my coworkers wont even show up half the time. our attendance policy is a joke. we are allotted 40 hours a year that we can call in on however we choose. and if we go over the 40 hours then we get a "review" which i bet is nothing more than a slap on the wrist.. i have to pay bills so im in that bitch every day unfortunately. and wow thats sad they actually pay people to sit around and harass their employees via keylogging software. seems like a huge waste i dont see how they keep employees!

I work in a call center too, but just regular office hours. 830 to 5 and I spend half the day waiting for a call to come in, my utilization % is like 65 so I spend the rest here
