You can use 4" just fine. But you need a way to support them. I wouldn't use hydroton in that style. You should use a root mat under your cubes. This will give your roots somewhere to go. But you can't move your plants after that.

Been good. Things are Finaly slowing down so I can catch up here.

I would definitely want to be able to move my plants. I'm leaning towards 2 gallon pots filled with hydroton using 4 inch rockwool cubes.
