Let me here your 2 cents. I used brown rice whole grain and vermiculite. I also did a few different jars after running out of the whole grain. I used Oatmeal which seems to be working nice and I did a few jars with only instant whoel grain brown rice.

The instant rice is colonizing twice as fast as the other jars showing the same growth in half the time.

What you got I want to dial in this is my first run
 
Substrate for making cakes on pf tek style jars? I have only used brown rice flour and ground up wild bird seed to make cakes, I'd stick to the brown rice without a pressure cooker. If you have a cooker try spawning grains to bulk, it will be much more worth your time and effort than cakes.

Loose grains colonize much faster than cakes because you can shake them to spread the mycellium.
Popular choices are rye berries, wild bird seed, and popcorn.

So you've decided to branch out into mushies now Balzac? I picked it up as a hobby about two years ago during the "offseason." Good way to pass the winter while you plan out the outdoor for next year.:bigjoint:

what kind of coir do you use?
 
I always wanted to learn, but it always looked to complicated. To tell you the truth its less complicated than growing maryjane.


Whats your favorite strain? Im starting wiht Z I was thinking Ecudorian or Penis Envy next order.

Any good videos on youtube about bulk substrate after this run I might be going bigger.
 
I use quart jars. Fill each jar up about half way with dry corn. Dump it all out into a big pot and let it soak overnight in water. I've noticed when you soak less kernels burst when simmering. Drain that water off and cover again with water. Let simmer on low heat for about an hour or two until the kernels become soft, but not mushy. Almost like al dente pasta.

I like ecuador and golden teacher from sporeworks.
 
don't use any flour. Use a grain instead. You will never thank me because you won't know all of the problems you avoided with flour teks. Lots of people here use flour but it really doesn't make sense, you can not shake your jars and you will always have moisture retention problems - which is why the cake people have to do that dunk and roll stuff. Best to just make your substrate the right moisture to begin with. The more moisture that is in your intitial substrate the more mushrooms you get as the limiting factor is moisture and not nutrient.

I had one jar that tipped in the cooker and it just got flooded. Its still colonizing just alot slower. But it is a heavy bastard
 
I have a few jars that are fully colonized should I fruit them like they are or should I try to crumble them into a bulk subtrate?

Yeah but I've done experiment with crushing them and and adding them to coir and also using them alone. I never seemed to yield any more than fruiting them whole. If you are going to run cakes, my advice is to run cakes. Dunking and rolling after each flush. I know canndo has a difference in opinion on this subject than I do but I think they are fine for the hobby grower. He's right in that they are a pain making all those little jars and always dunking and rolling but if you just want some boomers to eat with your friends a few time a year and that's it I think it's a cheap and easy way to accomplish that. Before I went to grains I got pretty damn good with cakes. I could easily pull 2-3oz dry off 10 cakes over 3 flushes.
 
Cough I already got jars so i got room to mess around. I only lost one to mold so far and its been almost three weeks.
