i recently just bought the one from radioshack the handheld 60x/100x one. Amazing i have no idea what/why people complain about it, its easy to use, and works fantastic. worth every penny.

Try the 40X first and get used to using one. A 100X to the uninitiated can make you dizzy and mad real quick. $15 on Amazon. My suggestions for buying if you have none:

First a 30X jewelers loupe or a big magnifying glass. You'll use there as your "go to" optics.

Next a 40X and as your bud matures there get used daily to check trichomes and bud structure and to excite the living hell out of you

Then a 100X for those hard decisions "Now or later".

Have fun.

100x might be a little too much zoom, I have 60x and that is more than enough to see thc crystals. for $5 I got this Iphone case with a detachable maginifying lense plus currency detector. It was $5 shipping included and it really awesome, I can take pics of magnified bud from my iphone now, its kinda tricky to use at first, but once you figure out how to use it, this thing is awesome.

Here is a close-up of my Blue Dream, Thank you China for all your cheap but useful junk.

Looks good, but you gotta tell us how accurate that "currency detector" is. LOL

A 100x lab microscope is amazing. A 100x toy digital microscope is trash. The glass (or sensor) is far more important. A lot of people buy the 30x pocket microscopes for $10, yet they aren't half as clear as $35 10x Loupes. If you want to really know about glass and magnification, go to forums for people who like to study insects, coins, or jewelry. Those people will give you much better advice.

I've never seen or heard of any one buying a 30x jeweler's loupe. Normally you get a 10x because loupes work differently then scopes. With a scope, you put your material down and bring the scope closer to it. A loupe works in the exact opposite manner. You bring the loupe to your eye, then slowly bring the material to your face, just in front of your nose. You move it back and forth to change the magnification. 10x is perfect for most people, but for someone looking to study one tiny trichome, you could move up to a 20x loupe. However, you see a lot less material so it's less useful in determining if the material as a whole is ripe enough.

I bought a 100x but it is hard to hold and use as it is so sensitive so I am buying a cheaper one.

I'm beginning to like this hotrodharley guy. His advice is usually spot-on.
I will say that I'm using a 20x triplet loupe, and it does the job for me. 100x brings more problems than benefit imo. 40-60x would be ideal for me. cn
