I have just recently started trying to grasp and start using all organics for my garden period. I have been using a base potting mix of canadian sphagnumpeat moss, perlite, vermic, dolo limestone and the calcitic limestone in an attempt to start with a good base soil. I have read some threads here and realize i have alot to learn about organic soils. I was wondering if anyone in the organics cicrle here could kinda take me under there wing and spread some knowledge my way please? I just have plenty of time and attention to devote to this. Anything helps and as far as i'm concerned a closed mouth dont get fed! thankyou all for the time.

easiest way to get into organics is Super Soil. Sub has a few threads on it in his sub-forum, and there are tons of people using it, its really very simple and easy to mix/use.

good start i recommend using roots organic or fox farm ocean forest as a base then adding in some earthworm castings, alfalfa meal, kelp meal, living Alaskan humus. for liquid nutes start adding from the very beginning of flower i use Hygrozyme, Ful-Power humic acid, The Guano Company super tea mix, and general organics cal-mag. this is a good mix i have been using for awhile now with great results

Hi VTM. I will absolutely take you under my wing. And congratulations on your choice to go all organic. You won't look back if you keep your nose in this forum and keep learning!

Now, since you're new to organics, the first thing you're gonna have to do if you want my help is ditch the soil you're using and go with something at least similar to what I use. I have great results and so do most other people on here with their own mixes, but the reason I would want you to use a mix similar to mine is because you will have less problems meaning less questions for me to answer :bigjoint:.

Here's my mix, it's also really cheap to make. If you can't get a few of the ingredients right now it's not life or death, just soil. But my mix is not just organic, it's also vegan. I don't believe that there is any way to "sustainably" harvest bat guano, bone and blood are slaughterhouse products, and cow and chicken manure has too high of a disease risk for me.

Dolomite lime –1 cup (I use Epsoma)
Neem cake – 1 cup (http://www.neemresource.com)
Karanja cake – 1 cup (http://www.neemresource.com)
Mykos – 1 cup (I use Xtreme Gardening Mykos, awesome and cheap. I also reapply with their Mykos WP early flower the feeding after a good P dose. I also use Roots Oregonism on rooted cuttings.)
Coffee/tea grounds – 1 cup
Greensand – 1 cup

¼ bale of compressed coco chips (I’m using HydroFarm Planting Chips, but I’m looking for a better chip product that’s still OMRI. I just the chips instead of Perlite. Maybe you can find a better brand of chips)
2 bales compressed coco coir fibers (GO CocoTek OMRI coir)
3 gallons EWC
1 gallons worm compost (I’d have used 2 gallons or more if I had enough)

If you use this mix you can PM me with any questions you have, I don't mind answering them. But sometimes I'm not on for a few days...

Also, if you haven't been to these threads yet you should probably check out some of the info either way. This is where you'll really learn what you want to know.

Wow, To think i thoguth i had a grasp on things because i was using this spagnum soil and producing decent medicine. I am eyes wide open at the knowledge that was just thrown my way. All that being said i need advice from some more eastern growers on how a gardener can get these supplies that witchdoctor mentioned in a state that's not only a year or two behind other western state's in the indoor gardening supply store availability! I mean literally i have MAYBE two store within a 100 miles of me and they are IM RICH AND DONT CARE PRICES, for example 700-800 for a simple 400-600 watt set-up with a magnetic ballast? It has to be because we have alot of college towns where thru the year they get frivilous spending by rich college kids cause i have yet to see any indioor farmer that can afford to shop locally. I am all ears please and thankyou.

1/3rd peat moss, 1/3 vermiculite, and 1/3 compost. Use at least 3-5 different sources of compost or potting soil. Fertilizer is unnecessary with this mix. Build a raised bed or use a plastic kiddy pool. Figure 100 gallons or more per plant. Start your seeds in early March, right after danger of frost has past, and water with good old cheap city tap water from the hose. Again you don't need to fertilize. You can top dress with more soil at any time, but this is all you really need. It should cost you $30-$40 per plant. And you will get huge plants.

The reason it works is because the mix is high in organic matter and drains well. The organic matter will naturally break down and feed throughout the year.
