in need of advice for first grow

first of all this is going to be my first attempt at growing, I am in northern ontario, and have 10 purple power, 10 holland's hope, and 205 bag seeds that I don't know what to do with(that is if they even germinate) they are pretty old and were stored in a unsealed plastic baggie... I am planning on starting inside and moving outside.

My main question is pretty simple and yes I did look/search the forum, I don't know if I am looking in the wrong place or not but cant find any answers that seem helpful.

So here it is. How do you tell if your seedlings are ready to go outside? how long should I grow them inside before putting them outside? I don't want to plant the seeds outside as I want the best chance for them to grow... and cannot grow inside all the way through.

I am not going to ask too much else as I have found a ton of info in my search for this answer.

thanks for the quick reply, my main concern is how everyone talks about shocking or stressing the plants... and how that can kill them, i also know that(from what i have read anyway) that outdoor plants tend to be a lot stronger as they are dealing with the elements as opposed to a indoor plant, so i am wondering if the timing of the transfer is important or if i just put them out there after the last frost is gone if they should be ok...

they should be fine if they start getting tall inside put a fan blowing on them so they can get ready for the wind outside and build a stronger stem

Im starting indoors and moving outside around middle of May to Memorial Day. I hear lots of people always say memorial day. I started mine in early April, hopefully they'll be big enough to survive when I get them out there. I deal with deer where I live so the bigger the better so they dont get trampled. Im going to be using fishing line as a make shift fence, and deer and rodent repellant so they dont get munched...

The bigger your plant the better chance it has at survival outdoors. Just protect your plants from deer they love young ganja plants!

It's just a matter of growing them to a height/size where they have a good chance of survival in outdoor conditions. Don't worry about the stress factor - it's not an issue. Sure, there'll be a little stress transplanting them but it's nothing to worry about at all. They'll do just fine. When you put them in the ground (bucket or whatever) use the same soil that the plant is in now and fill the hole/bucket with it. Pre-moisten it with your water/nute solution before putting the plant in. Then, make a spot for the plant big enough to hold the entire pot of soil you have now. (Wait 'till the soil in your current pot is dry before transplanting and it will pop right out of the pot - much easier than wet.) Stick that into the pre-moistened soil, and if the soil in your new hole is wet enough (which is what I do, quite wet) you don't need to water at that time. The transplanted plant/soil will soak it up naturally and away you go! Good luck!!

I should have added ... I'm in southern Ontario and I find mid-May is usually warm enough. My personal rule is this: if it's going down below 5 celsius at night, it's still too cold. Once the nights are 5C or above ... I plant.

thank you for the quick advice, I am planning on bringing soil to my site over the next few weeks and getting things preped for the time of planting, I am planning on trying a combo of SHAMAN's idea of the soil in a burlap sack and others planted in the ground with my soil also mixed in, I am also going to use a fishing line fence for deer and bigger animals that feel the need to munch, chicken fence for smaller animals(rabbits, etc) and copper mesh for mice and slugs...

I think i have all the bases covered, and am also thinking of throwing a tiny bit of polymer crystals into the soil for retaining a little moisture as to get to my site i will need to drive for about an hour, then paddle for another 30 min to a hour probably, and hike thru the bush with my gps for a bit to get there...

i don't think there is much chance of being discovered out there

Been away for a while ... just wondering, if you have to paddle 30 - 60 minutes, is that going to be safe for you when bringing the harvest back? Just thinking ...

i am doing the paddling to avoid a trail... at least a more noticeable one that would be easier to find, plus i have the excuse of fishing when i go to check on them:mrgreen:

i can hike to them when it is harvest time, about the same amount of time... just don't want to be parked on the side of the road in the same area when i can go a little farther out and paddle in to get to them without raising too much suspicion by locals, know what i mean?

sounds good. Good luck and be safe! also use dolomite lime in your mix at 1 tablespoon pergallon of mix, this will give your plants the needed calcium and magnesium.

thank for the advice, any ideas on if the polymer crystals are a good idea? i don't want to have to go just to water them, I am wondering how well these will help, like if i use them how long can they hold the water to keep the plants going without rain? I would probably be going to check on them once every 2 weeks or so, unless i find a problem, then i may go more if i have a "sick" plant or something like that

sure, the water crystals would be fine. Just follow the directions on the box. The water crystals hold the water until the plant needs them.
