dude. the gulf of oman is part of the pacific ocean.

gulf of oman is just a big fjord off the arabian sea which is part and parcel with the indian ocean, and the south pacific.

from the gulf of oman any deep water freighter can sail from iran to san francicsco without ever passing through a canal a lock or a portage.

I think you're gonna need to be a bit more pacific. ~giggling, ducking~ cheap shot. I'm bored. cn

Doc, I understand that Iran borders the Persian Gulf, and that's fine for Iran's oil export going south.
But take a look at the map ask yourself how they get oil exports to Europe which is one of Iran's biggest importera of crude.

All's I'm saying is, someone took Romney's statement out of context to make it appear that he said Iran is bordered by Syria, you cannot deny the fact Syria is Iran's only ally in the region and their only hope to access the Mediterranean.

Ok easy question...
If you were in Iran and you wanted to transport large cargo to Italy, France, and/or Spain, how would you?

I think even you missed the context of Romney's statement, he was not referring Iran has no access to any sea, I agree he should have more specific and called out the Mediterranean. Hell I did the same thing in my post above, I assumed everyone was talking of the Mediterranean

Seems like a long long trip for Iran to get to the Suez. If you have no other options, seems like the best route.

I admit Romney should have specifically said the Mediterranean Sea, I imagine he assumed most people understand that Syria borders the Mediterranean, not the Persian Gulf!

It's just like the "optimal" comment by the president, everyone knows Obama did not mean what he said, but as usual, your opponents are right there ready to pounce at any small thing you say!

im not your opponent. i usually agree with your positions.

I didnt get the Mediterranean from romney's brainfart, and it took till page 3 for any of you who DID infer the specific sea romney implied to actually mention the med. i admit i was pretty high but the comment sounded like a brainfart, and smelled like burnt butthairs.

meanwhile, obama repeated "not optimal" several times, and jon stewart parroted him. they both said what they meant repeatedly, in that the situation is "Not Optimal" since "I Fucked Up" is the one thing the Brahmin in Chief can never say.

It's not that bad. It not-quite-doubles sea mileage, and it avoids the need to trans-ship across land and then load the ship in a Mediterranean port.
If the product in question is oil and not "hard goods", a pipeline could be built. But negotiating its passage through Iraq is something I consider unlikely. I am not sure of Iranian-Turkish relations but imagine them to be "not good", i.e. the political and economic (pay the tariff, Assholes!) cost of the pipeline would be high. cn

Actually Med and Suez are both mentioned in the 2nd post. I absolutely LOVE the game Medieval Total War (1) and played it religiously until I loaned my dad the disk, he lost it, my computer burned up and I couldnt play it anymore. The Med and surrounding countries play a huge role in the game so I understood the importance of access to it.

If you ever come across the first game, I highly recommend it. It is Risk that doesnt rely on crappy dice rolls. The newer games I dont like much at all. Only the very first game. Comes with Viking's expansion pack.

No doubt we agree with each other on most positions, but sometimes we see thing from different angles.
When I was watching the debate and heard Romney talking about Syria being the only ally with Iran in the region and mentioned the path to the sea, I never once thought of anything else but the Mediterranean because of the fact that it's shores border Syria.

I understand people interpret what they hear differently, I'm also going to listen to the optimal video again, perhaps I missed something!
