Is This Why Americans Have Lost The Drive To "Earn" More?

we'll be starting off with less acreage and decide later if we want to go to large scale farming.
This is something that bothers me, not because I don't think you can do it, but because you haven't even thought this through at all. Do you really expect to be able to buy 10 acres then a year later or whenever it suits you buy an adjacent 1,000 acres?? You gonna force people to sell you land now? You gonna buy land and then contract with the locals to buy their land whenever you want?

LOL delusions guiding the delusional.

Farms have a very hard time of expanding from small to large, mostly due to the fact that land is in short supply as they aren't making anymore of it.

Good Luck with your "plans" UB, just don't be disappointed when no one will sell you their land when you want to upgrade.

ORLY?

Were you aware that not all land is the same. What you found easy to grow on your 10 acres may not even sprout in whatever place you move to. Its not like there is land for sale in every size and shape wherever you want to go.

these are facts of which i was unaware.

i always assumed that albertans were simply biased against watermelon. had no idea that different crops lend themselves to different places.

the main reason we want to start small is the capital investment in equipment. that shit is expensive.

that shit is expensive.
Small used tractor with no amenities other than a seat---$5000

Old school disk Plow----$1200

18 hour days of hard labor 6 days a week for 8 months out of the year----Priceless

Albertan's are biased against all sorts, never underestimate a Canadian.

$200,000 for the nicer ones.

A good Case IH 240MX will run ya $120,000, pulling a nice disk and cultivator another $65,0000. So yeah, if you want to farm big you need a Million or so to get started. Not including the land, which mine is worth about $4500 an acre, keeps going up though.

If you want to do what I am doing, bring about $7 million. All of my neighbors are millionaires too. we drive old beat up ford pick up trucks and wear bib overalls and chew hayseed all day.

Have you read FARM by Richard Rhodes? You might like it. cn
Farming is hard, my most hated part is dealing with the government and all the shit they got their hands into. I think anyone who does what I do has a very poor view of government controls. Unfortunately we are a dying breed.

Isn't Bucky in Oregon? Dont' think you can just buy small parcels of land there can you? Thought you had to buy some 200-300 acres at a time in most of that state unless it was zoned residential.

Farming is indeed hard, but I miss being a part of a full time operation more than anything these days. This couple acre gig I got going now just leaves me wishing I was still working side by side with Dad.

Bucky is never going to become a farmer, it requires real work and dedication and the ability to wake up really early. Buck has an aversion to actual labor and waking before noon.

there are plenty of small farms around here. head to the eastern part of the state though, and you got it right.

dude, i used to wake up at 3:45am to get to work by 4am. nowadays, 4am is my bedtime.

and don't try to act like the type of farming you do is much more than setting the GPS on your tractor.

LOl well one thing is for certain, you will never become a farmer if you think that's all there is to it. You can try try try, but in the end you will still be a total failure, why even try?
