Nah, you are dodging again. Zero tolerance has to be practical and intelligent or it is not Zero.

What this has become is less than Zero. A sort of do it yourself fanaticism, on the school board, that really has nothing to do with it. Petty tyranny. There was no cause and effect research about Columbine. Just panic.

And so the new Columbine laws and the idiotic reactions of School Boards were in-effective. We still have school shooting. Taft, CA last month was a shotgunning.

Panic just leads to more PANIC. We can prove that a gun-less society still produces mass killing. You can't prove anything, at all, about Zero Tolerance. I say it is stupid panic over lawsuits.

Zero-Tolerance Drugs Policy: 13 year old girls getting expelled for having Midol. 10 year olds getting suspended for their prescription antibiotics, but NOT for ritalin. 15 year olds getting arrrested for doing a prank which results in their "victim" eating a laxative tablet under the assumption he will get high.

Zero-Tolerance Weapons Policy: i myself got suspended for having a pair of nail clippers in 1987. not the nail clippers with a file or a blade on em, but ordinary fingernail clippers.

Zero-Tolerance Racism Policy: ohh how many tedious lectures on the evils of racism did i have to attend... in the end the message was clear, white kids were born evil, tainted by the sins of racism, and black kids must be forgiven their actions, because of the socio-economic conditions that force them to do the very things which would be RACIST!!! if they were not black. i got sent off to the school for troublemakers in 1988 for "attacking" a gang of 6 black kids at the bus stop. by myself. apparently i was so driven by blind RACIST!! hate that i had to just jump them, with my bare hands. at least thats the story they told.

as i was saying to doer above laws coming from tragedy rarely are implemented rationally

but i think with guns or knives (not nail files tho) it isnt the worst policy the story in the op is a story of a 5 yearold telling another 5 yearold she was going to shoot her (the pink bubble gun was neither at the scene or mentioned to the witnesses)

yes this is probably the most innocent use of that language BUT when dealing with the safety of the children (unless she actually was shooting the bubbles at the time (or it was obvious that she was talking about the bubblegun)) then it does have to be taken seriously

when it comes to fighting in school then zero tolerance does fall short of the mark as i've seen bullied victims stand up for themselves and fall under the hammer from such rules


as to your repeated question no i do not think columbine's shooting was the beginning/ cause of zero tolerance laws/rules

but the shooting certainly did spawn its own little clutch of them
