I had a friend in prison down in Cuba -- he was an 80's boat-lift refuge/smuggler... Anyway, before he got caught, he sat in an apartment for 4 months, sold enough weed to chill -- he watched old TV shows -- Lucille Ball, shit like that. He spoke like he'd grown up in the 50's! Lived as an old "Mexican American" for a couple years until the feds caught up to him. I learned Spanish by getting the Spanish package on cable, and calling all of my Latin friends and telling them that they can only speak Spanish to me. I tried Rosetta Stone, and some classes, no good. I tried that old Cuban's trick, and am fluent. Started with music, then television (the Spanish soaps are the BEST! Seriously, more drama than the political section!) Took a few months, was very frustrating trying to do business with a partner who I had strictly told "only Spanish" ... Just like weed in hot oil, immersion works!

Didn't work for me, worked for people I know. It's how ya' learn that matters.

And, I was in prison down south, not in Cuba, a guy I met in the joint was from Cuba.

I think watching the news in any language is a good clear way to learn. I also recommend watching ur DVD's in English but with Spanish (or ur choice) in subtitles at the same time.

I took a little Spanish in High School (70s). I didn't do well even back then. Now I don't bother - not like I really need a second language. I listen to songs in other languages fairly often, but no one language in particular. I just like the vocalizations along with the instrumentation. I'm a big fan of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, for example, and I don't know any Zulu.
