germinating

What is the best way to germinate? I have had much success with paper towel in plastic sandwich bag but its always been midgrade seeds. Now that I have good seeds they seem harder to start. I had one pop out so I potted it but now the root looks brownish and not growing, whereas mids always grow.

I heard about success with jiffy pellets, so I tried them out after using the towel method and I have to say I prefer it. You don't have to worry about touching the root when you're planting it or anything plus it gives roots a little more time to develop. I think I paid like 8 bucks on amazon for the tray and 12 pellets. Word of warning they dry out quick so just keep an eye on them if oyu go that route.

I've always used the paper towel method WITHOUT the sandwich baggie... and, to be honest, I've never had a problem.

are you soaking the seeds for 12-24 hours before the paper towel?

I use the soak and plant method.
Soak seeds in tap water for about 12 hours.
plant in party cup 3/4 full of seedling soil.
Plant seed in very shallow hole covered with just enough soil to cover seed.
With a spray bottle wet soil in cup very well place under 40w tube light. l like the tube light for warmth I place it about 2" over the cup. I think temp has more to do with good sprouts then method of germing. keep the cups at 80 Have had great luck with this. sprouts as fast as 24 hr and take as long as two weeks.

I am using 2qt containers can I just put in soil from the tap water or do I need seeding soil. That is how I have my top shelf seed just barely covered with soil. I touched root when planting though. Could that have damaged it?

push seed into soil till its flush with top of soil. cover with some soil, pat down once or twice.

water with a sprayer twice a day, with WARM water.

have a sprout in 3 days with a 1-2" taproot. (yes, i know how long the taproot is in three days becuase i knocked a cup over once and my baby popped out completely. she was fine)

Ive got 7 seeds germinating right now, they all sat in a cup for 12 hours, one had a TINY tap root pop out, It wasnt long enough for me to be comfortable and plant it, so after 12 hours all the seeds sank and I placed them into the paper towel, today 4 of the taproot popped out. waiting on the other 3. Planting tomorrow morning.

thats great for jeffdamann but I'm saying it works well for me, maybe if you're having a problem you should try something different from what your doing.
