How close to the military are you? One person away (a brother/sister/mom/dad)? 2 people away (an aunt/uncle, grandpa/grandma)? 3 people away (cousin)? Etc..

Of the average American, how close are we to the military?

Answer your own question and then I'll answer :D
I know a few people in the military, but I don't really associate with them, they're people I went to high school with.

None of my family have ever been in the military, none of my real close friends.. I know a guy whose in the NAVY special forces, but the closest contact I have with him is Facebook..

None in real life, I guess..

Nobody in your family, going back two generations maybe three, served in the military? Not just including the U.S.?

Have relatives 2+ generations back and others close to me in, and I am close enough that if you sing our Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish or do not remove your hat when Ole Glory is paraded by, you're bound to get your ass kicked.

Not really sure, I hear my grandpa on my mothers side served sometimes in the 1950's-1960's, but I haven't heard anything specific..

How do they/did they like it?

My grandparents loved it and as far as I know my other friends love it to.

I think some of them are in it for the money as a few went in as officers.

I had a great grandpa who was a WW2 vet, dunno much about him tho, but I was named after his first name. My half brother recently joined the Navy a few months ago, we don't have much pfna military history lol.

I was raised in a Navy Family... met tons of great enlisted people.. I had a job when I was 16 cleaning up at a CPO (cheif petty officers) club (military bar-dining hall) and they all loved to shoot pool and bowl so they always looked for an "easy" target to open up with.. and it was usually some of the kids working here..
I can spot a military person pretty easy... all in the stance

I often hear gunfire in the distance from on of the target ranges near one of the bases. So I guess you could say we're neighbors.

I didn't see the "I'm retired from the military" option, but that would take care of me.
My father retired from the USAF, one of my uncles was in the USN, and my favorite (and only) nephew is a Black-hawk pilot in the sandbox as we speak.

And honestly nobody does this "for the money", because there's really not a giant check attached to your contract.

Do you think you could tell your nephew to bring the black hawk to my area for a bit?

I've got some people that may or may not be of a nuisance to me. :D

They wouldn't give you any trouble after a fly-by or two.
And think of all the free fertilizer you'd have.
