"tilling" soil...

I dont plan on cutting up roots or anything, but read that tilling helps with drainage and since I recently had a drainage issue, was thinking if it happens again i would try this. But was concerned about the rotting...

I know dead stuff decays in the wild all the time, but i am not leaving my plant here for 5 years to let the material decay to get the benefit.

always something to learn in this field. next time add extra perlite. some people have half their mix perlite. might have to water a day or 2 more often with all the extra perlite but you get good drainage, and more air gets to the roots for them to breathe. also using that much perlite its pretty much impossible to over water your plant.

The drainage issue was due to incorrect pot. the pot was supposed to desolve out doors and didnt have drainage holes.. I didnt no that...

I have already transplanted into a regular plastic 1.5 gal pot. If drainage issue persists, i already plan on getting perlite.

While "TILLING" the soil, and severing roots, if you do not remove the torn roots cant they get root rot, and disturb the balance of the soil?

He's taking about topping your roots while still in the pot. Yes some roots will rot.,the amount of roots that are severed is minuscule, and should have no adverse affect on the plant. He only has his probe which is probly only 1/4" in diameter.

I'll answer it again. NO. I said no effect the furst time i posted. Six 1/4" holes in your soil is not going to mess with your PH. There isn't enough root damage from the 6 1/4" holes to mess anything up.

Like i said, I didnt intend on sounding like an asshole, and appologize if it sounded that way.

I do appreciate the HELP i get from RIU. It just seems as much help is going around, theres twice as much ignorance.

Dude, nice that you apologized, but I thought when I said in the very first post in the thread that the roots severed would not be enough to affect the soil, I really did think I was answering your question.

no..they decompose into food for the plant..but it takes a while with things like roots. root balls belong in compost. you till soil to give it a little restart..but you have to rest soil at some point in time..crop rotation is also good becuase different crops grow different root structures and they let their own sugars into the ground..still not a solution for soil rest

the quickest things that get digested by soil are solube nutrients. i would call roots insoluble

your plant looks sick
