fan question

So I'm going to be picking up a 4 inch carbon filter in the next week or 2 and was wondering since my closet that I would be growing in would be small just big enough for 2 small plants could I get a 6 inch inline booster fan rated at 160 cfm instead of getting a big ass inline because I don't have room for one of those and they are way to loud. Also the carbon filter is rated for a fan that can pull at least 150 cfms so will this work, I know your not suppose to really use a booster fan but do you think it would work i mean the math adds up and seems like it would and also I would only be growing 2 autos at most if that makes any difference.

If you're growing with an HID light get the inline fan. If you're growing with CFL's you can probably get away with the inline duct fan. Duct booster fans rated CFM is with no resistance. With the resistance from a carbon filter that rated CFM will drastically drop. They aren't designed to be used with to something that will provide resistance.

I always make time for my fans!!! I agree with mr2shim duct boosters are not so great with a canister filter. They make a unit that sits on the floor, you attach the canister filter and plug it in. it claims to be quiet and is just for filters, this may serve your purpose if exausting your room isn't an issue.

If the booster fan is needed for venting your hood, try it if it works cudos and good job. just saw a carbon canister on line that claims no resistance. I'm sure that is true Iv'e seen these. but do they remain that way, or clog up. I don't worry so much with smell so I don't buy these products. My shit don't stink!!! No man just kiddin. I vent out of my grow room through a split dryer vent. over a bed of basill warm air and fresh basil smell is all we get outside.

Yea I'll be using CFLs and at first I am only going to be growing one plant. Eventually I plan on picking up a t5 but I will only be running 2 and maybe when I get that I'll get a inline fan but thanks for the answer that's exactly what wanted to hear. Also I was watching some guy on YouTube who used a inline booster fan with his filter and he said it worked great here's the link if you wanted to see it

The problem with the booster fans I have had is that they break. I've had 3 and they keep breaking. The guys in the shop I got them at even admit they've had the same problem.
If you use them to cool a hood for a few months the warm air that gets pulled from the hood burns out the bearings. As soon as you shut the fan off it won't start up again because once the bearings are fried the motor isn't powerfull enough to get the fan going again. That could be dangerous during a power outage. Power goes out, fan shuts off. Power goes back on, fan won't go on. Next thing you know your hood is overheating and your bulb bursts and catches on fire.
I'm getting a 6 inch high velocity fan with a speed controller next. No more booster fans.

I'm growing in a small closet but I'm now thinking of getting an inline, my only question now is how loud would a 4 inch inline be I don't want people to come over and be like what the hell is that that was one of my main concerns of getting an inline

A cheap booster fan wont pull air through a filter and as mentioned above, will burn out. You'd be better off getting a good exhaust fan with a speed control.

The sunleaves windtunnel is supposed to be a very quiet inline fan. Especially is you get a quality speed controller.

If you get a speed controller I'm reading you have to pay up for a better quality one than the cheap one's you can get from htg or greeners that sell for around $20. People have been complaining that they screw up their fans with the cheap speed controllers.

Good reviews on this speed controller though.

If you do get a speed controller do some research and make sure you're getting one that works well with the inline fan you get.

Exactly. They aren't made to run continuously. I dabbled with one once, same thing Edgar describes. Total junk.

I use a 6" 300CFM FAN mounted with bungee cords to my ceiling along with a CAN-LITE 600CFM filter.

When my room is running, the only thing I can hear is my dehumidifier. If I turn off my dehumidifier my room makes zero noise.

Its all about position and how you fix it in place.

My grow room is above my stair case and none of my friends or family have ever asked about any noise.
