Not sure how that happened Agree with your take on the non-LED
For LED, it is not a replacement for HPS in all situations -- if you're gonna grow full size plants with no or minimal training in a big room, I wouldn't recommend running LED. If you are the kind of person who's scrogging or LSTing your plants for canopy control, then yes, LED would work well in a large grow room. My grow area is in its own room I don't use the whole space only 6'x4' - I should be harvesting anywhere from 2-3 LBs (4 not out of the question if i hit the upper range of yields i've hit before with these same lights) depending on how things turn out from that space with under 1K of electrical power draw. I could scale it up to fill the whole room if desired but I currently don't have a way to get rid of that much Even so, even if they're 'fine for a closet hobby grow' -- that's very different from saying they're crap, which is what I was disagreeing with. I agree that there are chinese ripoffs and older LEDs that were crap. By and large what you get now other than from no name chinese ripoff places works well - there's an argument to be made over whether the higher cost of the lights makes up for the electric. If you're living in a high cost electric area it definitely should. They will save you both on raw electrical power draw compared to HPS and power to control the environment (ie a/c and ventilation). not saying they're better than hps, just that there are different pros and cons and not "crappy" (at least as a general rule).
I've never touched an HPS bulb but based on touching regular light bulbs i'd say it's a reeeeal bad idea.
