Possible to grow a Sativa and an Indica at the same time?

Hey guys, I've decided to start growing my own stash and so far the biggest problem I'm having is picking strains.

I'd like to have one strain that makes me relax, chill out and if smoked enough, gets me insane couch lock and one strain that is uplifting, leaves me with a shit eating grin on me face, and makes me want to get out there and do shit. So one to get me stoned and one to get me high. Hence a sativa and an indica.

The only problem I'm sure if I can work around is the height situation. I know sativas grow taller than indicas and don't know if it's possible to growth both because of this. The roadblock I'm seeing is that since one plant will grow taller than the other, that one will receive more of the HPS lights since I can't have the light at equal distance form each other because it will either burn the sativa because it will be too low or might not provide enough light to the indica because it's too low.

Am I right in my assessment or hopefully, am I completely wrong? Can I grow both at the exact same time? If I can, how would I accomplish that? The more information the better because remember, I'm quite new at this!

If I can't do this, or it isn't recommend, are there two strains that grow similar in height but provide different types of effects, i.e., one that gets me high and one that gets me stoned?

Thanks in advance guys, this forum rocks. :)

kali mist from serious seeds is great for sativa and you can bend the plant using fishing lines and sinkers...indica i would say nyc diesel or hash berry from mandalay seeds... ive grown both under one 400 w hps....good luck...

I would guess that the flowering time would be differant for both since Sativa takes SOOOO long to flower :(

Thanks for the fast replies guys, it's appreciated. If it's cool with everyone, I had a few more general questions that go with this that I would appreciate any replies from. If you think I'll get better responses if I just posted a new thread, please let me know.

1. Are the root developments similar in sativa and indica plants? I know the height of the plant itself is but what about overall root length and development?

2. Whatever I'm flowering, I was thinking about making a DWC setup using a Rubbermaid container for 6 plants. Is there a general gallon size that would be just right for the root development of 6 plants without constricting them or inhibiting growth?

3. For this 6 plant DWC set up, is there a recommended HPS bulb? I've heard anywhere between 450W, 600W, and forth. I know more light doesn't hurt but I don't want to get the most expensive light on the market if it doesn't do anything more than a bulb wattage that is less and cheaper. Is there a place online that is reputable and sells HPS lights including the ballasts and stuff for cheap?

4. Since I was doing the DWC set up, it would be impossible to raise the indica plants on blocks would it not, since they're enclosed in the container correct? Which leaves me with just the option to tie them down. Does anyone have a picture they can show that showcasing the right way to do this? Is there such a thing as tying down a plant too much so that it effects the plant in a negative way?

5. Indoor sativas such as Kali Mist. Approx. how tall do they get?

6. Somewhat off the topic but what hell, thought I'd ask it anyway. What's the official smoke report of AK47? I've read some say it's more a cerebral high and some say it's more of a couch lock stone. Who's right? Does it maybe depend on how much you smoke? If it's more cerebral, do you think I could grow that and some northern lights since they would both give different effects yet grow similar in height?

Any more replies would be greatly appreciated, thanks a lot!

1. I've never noticed any significant difference, but then again, I've mainly grown in soil, and most of those I've had in an aeroponic setup were Indica dominant strains. Hopefully someone else can answer this question more definitively.

2. I'm not sure of the exact gallon size, but if you're going to do six plants in deep water culture and you have the space, you might want to get one of their general storage tubs, which are usually around 2x3x3' (an approximation from memory). Root balls in hydroponic and aeroponic systems can generally fit a 6" soil container... Though soil growers need more room than that, for obvious reasons. It depends how long you want to keep it in a vegetative state. If you're doing something like SCrOG, which can take a bit longer, that will be adequate. To be honest, it could probably even be much smaller. I've only built my own aeroponic setups for one plant and for cloning purposes. The rest of the time I went with prefabricated setups. I would think three/four gallons or so is a nice round number based on my experiences.

3. A general rule of thumb is between 10,000 to 20,000 lumens per plant, minimum. Go to htgsupply.com (High Tech Garden Supply) and look at their selection. If I remember correctly, they have a 1,000w switchable MH and HPS kit that's very reliable for about $380 dollars. Not bad at all, and it will be more than adequate for several plants. If you buy one of their products off of their ebay store, it might even be a little cheaper than going through the site, but they'll have less selection.

4. Cannabis is extremely resilient. It will bounce back from virtually anything you can personally through at it as far as such things go. And tying it down is not your only option... You have several. You can actually bend the plant almost 90 degrees, if you bruise the area you're going to bend first lightly with your finger tips, softening it up. Then carefully bend (and tie, if you want to keep it at 90 degrees), being careful not to split the stem. Even if it does split, it's not the end of the world. Cannabis will usually form a "knuckle" of sorts when you do this. It can usually heal even if cracks right open, but you obviously want to avoid this. There's a "liquid bandage" product for plants which I've heard works well, but I've never used it myself, and with cannabis is might be a bit redundant.

You can also trim the plant to make it bushier. But since height seems to be such a concern for you, I recommend you get yourself some chicken wire or trellis netting and utilize the Screen of Green Method. It requires training the plant quite a bit, but you can easily double or triple your yield if you do it right and not be concerned about height. If you do this over trimming, you get to save your top cola (this applies to tying it down as well).

5. Cannabis, Sativa or otherwise, will grow as tall as you allow them to, if you treat them right. Not all sativas are created equally, though. Some seem to stretch more, some have a slower growth rate than others. Kali Mist has a good genetic profile though, so it should be fine for whatever your purposes are.

Hope that helps.
