What do you think?

Should people have the right to decide when they want to die?

If so, how far does this extend? Should there be an age requirement? Should there be circumstantial requirements? If so, what do you think they should be? A terminal patient, a homeless, depressed individual who has never held a steady job, a person who is tired of fighting drug addiction... what?

I think people should, and I don't believe anyone else should need to understand their reasoning. I think they should go over it with their family and make the best decision according to them, I don't think the government should have anything to do with it

Yup if someone would like to end their life they should be able to.I think if they are very ill/handycapped in some horrible way that they cannot even live life outside of bed they deserve to be set free.

Yes.

Age requirement: 18+ If Under Parent/Guardian Permission.

Lethal injection that YOU have to pay for. Before you do it.

Anyone could do it... Lots of paper work though

On the same premise that attempted suicide is a crime in some states.. they'd have to waive all of the bylaws/state specific rules before that could ever be considered an option.. or they'd just add more paperwork to it to verify residence in a state for X amount of time, etc.

This is a thorny one for me. On the one hand, i know with lively passion what it is like to want to be dead.
On the other, it isn't a victimless act unless one is truly isolated from all society.
My mother's mother did herself when Mama was 20. Here we are, 65 years later, and she still hasn't forgiven her mother.
Knowing that means I am alive today. I swore that i would never deliberately fail to survive my parents. cn

ONLY My own opinion- not political/religious...just personal..
I think that people should not have the right to just decide "i don't like this anymore- life is no fun' and go "off" themselves-- HOWEVER... people with incurable diseases/ailment (whether terminal or non-terminal) who are suffering with no hope of getting better and no quality of life SHOULD have the option of euthenasia.. HOWEVER- that decision would also have to bear a Psychiatric exam and determine whether their decision was possibly influenced by side effects of medications- or under duress....

Psychiatry would need to be radically reformed. Currently the impulse toward suicide is deemed sufficient for a diagnosis of mental illness. cn

I voted for the death with dignity act when it was up. Im pretty sure it passed too. If I had a terminal illness that had me miserably wasting away, I'm totally pro going out before I'm a serious burden to others. Give me a chem cocktail that pits me to sleep, then death. Peace out world!

I think a waiting period should take place between when the actual death/suicide takes place and when they apply to have assisted suicide. And that the person would have to see a therapist/doctor before having assisted suicide, just to see whether or not that person has a genuine desire to kill themselves, to assure that they wouldn't be making a bad decision.

But yes, I think assisted suicide would be a good idea - we're overpopulated on earth already, why not let the people that want to die, die?

who cares? If I want to kill myself I dont need the governments permission. My preferred method would be a heroin OD. But gsw to the head or driving your car off a cliff works as well.

It would just be nice to know that you aren't going to wake up in a worse situation than you were when you put a bullet in your brain. Could you imagine trying to kill yourself, waking up paralyzed or mentally retarded then not being able to do anything about i?. Shit could ALWAYS get worse . . .

Death already is a right. You just have to have the backbone to swallow the pills and not phone someone. In that moment when it's just you and the pill bottle/gun/method of choice many people change their minds. I do not think we should cross this slippery slope.

The US medical community respects advance directives. That seems enough responsibility for them. But if someone wants out the door is unguarded.

Make sure you have a notarized copy of your advance directive in a conspicuous place as part of your suicide plan.

I think it should depend on your mental state, and how old you are. I remember wanting to die when i was younger because a girl broke up with me... but i don't think i was in the right state of mind to make such a decision.

let them die if they want to. someone who wants to kill themselves should do it in anyway they want. a full facility or any means that you want. they should have gallows, guns, scalpels, pills, poisons and gases.

It's easy to say that when you don't have a child who wants to commit suicide. The attempt to empathize really goes a long way in conversations and giving sound advice.

Like i said, i think it all depends on the situation and circumstances, their age, and their mental state. Regardless, if someone really want's to die and they are psychically capable of doing so, no one can stop them.

Say you are paralyzed or old and in too much pain, and you don't want to live anymore, you have a sound mind and would like someone to put you out of your misery... i can empathize with that, and i think that it would be ok. Using medicine to kill rather than hanging or shooting yourself seems more "humane" to me.

This is a great topic.
