Usually if the bud is dry it's 'dead' after you cut the processes (starch turing to sugars, like a banana ripening) are still going on as long as they don't dry out. Slow drying I've heard is very important, my first grow and I dried for about 2 weeks at 58% RH and 18-20c. Smoke is super smooth.
Not cracking means there's a lot of moisture left inside the buds, things dry from the outside in. When you jar them up the moisture travels to the drier spots to compensate.
Try and find some jars buddy and use them after a few more days of drying, also try and get your humidity up!

check out humidipacks... they keep the humidity at 62% perfect for weed...
just get the humidipacks and use your own airtight container in a dark room.

Here's what I've found about drying/curing weed... If you have low humidity and warm temps where you plan to cure the plants you will not be very happy with the results. If your buds are drying after only a day then you need a better plan.
I live in a warm an very dry climate, my humidity in my house is often under 20% RH with temps from the mid/upper 60's through mid 70's depending on winter or summer but my humidity doesn't change a whole lot. I dried my last plant, a huge Chemdog lady in roughly 65 degrees and RH about 40%, it DRIED TOO FAST. It started getting crispy after only a day of hanging. I immediately took the buds and put them in heavy duty paper bags. I also put a 5 gallon bucket with two air bubblers off my DWC system to create a bit more moisture, it helped slightly, raised my humidity about 5 points but still was a little low IMO. I left the buds in the paper bags a few days as that did help slow the cure. I had a run of cool damp weather that helped just when I needed it but that's not always the case.
I put the buds in jars, I got a case of six 1/2 gallon Ball Mason Jars for $14 @ my local hardware store. I have several small digital hydrometers I throw in the jars with my buds to monitor humidity, it took a few days of regular burping to get the RH down to 60% and then I quit burping them. I keep the jars in a cool dark closet.
When I harvested the last of the Chemdog, I decided that I would not hang the buds at all. I trimmed the buds and left the colas intact, about 12" to 18" and put the buds in a few big paper bags. This worked great! It slowed the cure cycle way down, I would fluff and turn the buds a few times a day in the curing bags to prevent molding and I kept them in the same closet I used to hang the previous buds. After 3-5 days the buds were dry enough to jar, the bigger fat buds obviously took longer than the smaller buds. I noticed better color to the last set of buds slow cured and I noticed a better smell, more like the buds smelled while growing.
I've read most of the curing/drying threads here and other forums and found that most seem to be geared to a more humid environment than I have. It's not a good idea to replicate those processes unless you have a similar environment as the poster. I've been there, done that... and ended up with some high grade buds that smelled like hay and was kinda brownish more than green. The smoke was a bit hot and harsh, the taste wasn't too bad considering the smell and look but I knew it should have been much better.
I would suggest maybe getting a humidifier, one that is adjustable if you have low humidity and find your buds dry way too quick. I'm going to get one myself, still looking for the right one but I'm sure it will be worth it once I get it setup right.
Just remember that if those buds cure too fast you can't go back! You may never get the smell and taste you hoped for if that shit dries too fast. Slow cure if a must to get some sweet tasty buds!
