Considering the strain is safe, ie. Golden teacher, can any of the mushrooms turn out toxic?
im almost certain you can't grow toxic weed (mold maybe?), is the same true for mushrooms?
(after a dunk or two, i notice they turn a little darker but do some become toxic? ... is my question)

Thanks!

Yes. the celium (sp?) can become contaminated and things can become toxic......dark colors, grey, black, and other colors can be a sign of things going bad. Don't take a chance when this happens......throw the cake out so it doesn't contaminate anything else.

thanks!!
were you talking about the cakes alone or the mushrooms as well?
if the cakes get contaminated (becomes grey/black etc), toss 'em... although can the mushrooms themselves become toxic? is there anything to look for?

thanks!!!

i think they can but generally if you have contams you just chuck them.

psilosibe cubensis are actually considered a poisonous mushroom. the tocxins are what make you halucinate. (i suck at spelling)

i think as long as you dispose of bad jars like you should you dont have much to concern yourself with.

I've heard this before. I disagree. Who says they are poisonous mushrooms? And why? The compound closely resembles serotonin and it elbows it out of the way which is what makes you trip. It has a very low toxicity.b

I'd err on the side of safety rather then take a chance.......therefore, I look for healthy white mecelium, and blueing on the shrooms where touched. Period.

Mushrooms can have molds grow on them that can at least make you sick. Psilocin and psilocybin can cause stomach upset by binding to serotonin receptors in the gut.

Lot of folk lore here.

mycelium can pick up toxins from their surroundings, heavy metals, petrochemicals, but they are not known for conveying other mold's toxicity through the body of the organism, in other words, if you have a toxic mold growing next to a mushroom, the mushroom will not take up that toxicity. You may wind up with physical contact with the offending mold but that is a different story.

As Duck says, mold and bacteria can grow directly on the mushroom you seek and that can cause problems in the same way any food poisioning can. Mushrooms don't spontaneously produce wildly different chemcials, especially when their substrate is controled.

is there anything that will indicate a toxicity? ie. mold, colors (discoloration), smell etc...
(both fresh and/or dried)
things to "look out for"...
thanks!!

Just the obvious, a different color - like green or red or grey on the original fruit. If the fruit was dried properly in the first place and not allowed to grow moist, you won't have much of a problem. Watch out for your store bought ones as well.

you dont need to be worried about toxicity or anything with mushrooms. if they are contaminated with something your going to notice it with either discoloration and or the smell. are you using a shotgun terrarium for your cakes? stick your head in your tub and take a nice big whiff, it should smell like mushrooms. if it smells foul or sour then you know something is wrong. However typically if there is a serious contamination your cakes aren't going to fruit and like canndo said, its not going to just absorb any contam. Dont be worried about not waking up in the morning =p its thoughts like that that will put you in the wrong mindset and give you a bad trip. If your still not sure, post some pictures. i (and im sure others) have experience with mushrooms and can help to identify and potential issues.

Also, as mentioned above, make sure you dry them properly until they are cracker dry! then store them in an AIRTIGHT container (not a zip lock bag) However if all else fails, when in doubt, throw it out!

ON THE SUBJECT OF MYCOPHAGY:

There is a saying in German that translates roughly like this

" All mushrooms are edible, but some kinds only once. "

Put another way, There are old mushroom hunters and there are bold mushroom hunters, but there are no old bold mushroom hunters......:-)
