some ideas for soil, whatever you can get your hands on with your budget, add perlite or sand at to the soil and have a layer of it at the bottom of your pots. invest in a ph tester, if your ph is bad your plant can't grow properly. Your ph soil should be around 6 and your water around 5.7 When watering water thoroughly and allow to dry, you can tell if they need water if the top 2-3inches of soil are dry, or the plants leaves look/feel dry. This makes the roots totally use up the space provided in the pot. When i say water thoroughly i mean water till the top of the soil is floating and let it soak in.
If you don't let it dry out though your more likely to get bugs, and an overall unhealthy plant.
