Best guard dog I ever had was a Lab. He was easily trained and very loyal. He understood whistles and hand commands. He backed more than one person out the door. Plus, there is something about a large black dog that just freaks people out.

I like Rotts too. Both good dogs to have for security.

You couldnt be more wrong. I was just saying that mine are very protective of my house and my family. Whether they were bred to be that way or not. The main point i was making is that with proper training any dog will be a good guard dog and protecter.
 
I thought of this thread yesteday when I was opening my door to go in and my Chiuhahua started to bark and growl. So I acted like a robber being louder and as soon as I came in he was still barking but backing up, took him a while to notice it was me, I pretended to shoot him like 5 times too lol.

My German Shepard sheds pretty bad, its the annoying type of hair that sticks everywhere too, but if its on the porch or if you brush it every now and then its not too extreme, most dogs tend to shed a lot especially during spring
 
Burglar would shit if he saw this sitting on the couch when he broke in. Gives a whole new meaning to chew toy.

He's correct. The American Pit Bull was bred for fighting and to be human friendly because humans have to handle these dogs in the ring.

The American Stratford Terrier, commonly confused with the Pit Bull because they are almost identical in looks and have the same lineage, was bred to be more of a guard dog.

Of those I'd go with an American Bulldog. Healthy diverse line, very loving of family, extremely athletic and intimidating. Very protective and mastiff like. Any Mastiff makes an excellent guard dog, however not all mastiffs are meant for all owners. I really wouldn't recommend such a breed without dog experience and an ability to control it effectively. I see many who get in over their heads. They are big and can hurt someone accidentally, so control is a must.

Also, as others have said, true Pitbulls are not human aggressive and can make a deterrent, but won't be much of a guard dog really.

There are many "Pitbull" lines that are not really pitbull lines. The Blue Nose comes to mind immediately.

You likely have Stratford Terriers or Bandogge.

A German Shepard is born raised and bred to guard, it doesnt even like to do anything else then just lay on the porch or next to its boss just guarding..
I wouldnt recommend any other dog since i dont know anything about their characteristics, German Shepards are really intelligent they learn very fast and arent really dominant unless you are one of those idiots on dog whisperer

I know its not on your doggy list but if you want a dog that loves you more then it loves itself, Would be able to kill a man in seconds AND does funny stuff when doing nothing you should really get a German Shepard.

Shepherds are fantastic guard dogs. They are another dog that requires much experience. They are sometimes overly protective for some owners.
