Personally, when i started growing I had six plants in 7.5lt (sorry i know little of gallons) pots with a 30cm OD. Now however I grow two plants in 20lt buckets.
My reason for this is that as I became better at growing, I realised the likelihood of me completely killing a plant was dropping fast.
I now put all my eggs in two baskets, can pay more attention to the individual needs of the plants and have a stealthier grow with minimal loss in yeild.
No loss in quality.
As far as which is best.
I simply don't feel qualified answering that question.
As i see it each grower develops his/her own style and rhythm, if a giant pot that takes three to lift would suit you then great! If you'd prefer 20 small pots thats fine too.
Its all about experience, skill, set up and practice.
