I rooting for Fred, Sunny. Rising to the surface and gulping could also be a sign that there isn't enough oxygen in the water. I'm not exactly sure of your set-up Sunny but I'd maybe recommend some kind of decorative airstone, if you don't already have one. Hope everything goes swimmingly. :eyesmoke:

LOL swimmingly LOL thank you.

he is in a gallon fishbowl. has some "grass" and a tiki he was laying up against. he is swimming much better. seems to be much calmer. i thought these suckers could live in anything...isn't their natural habitat puddles of water in asia?

do fish feel pain? the eternal question. i am having a hard time NOW that i have fish, with using a live fish for bait. i must be nuts. i grabbed some nice chub for trout fishing the other day and cringed every time i put one on my hook, smh. i need therapy :eyesmoke:

Beta's supplement their O2 requirements with air - they have what is called a labyrinth (a very primitive lung), so the water MAY be low in O2 and then again maybe not.

I always thought the other way around. My fish looked like they would make great bait. :joint:

I'm sure it's an O2 connotation - yet I cannot for the life of me make the connection.

Edit: Damn, just got it - "Fresh Air".

I read that fancy betta fish are not the same kind as the more hardy, natural variety that live in puddles. Some guy on this site actually corrected me on that awhile back. He described the betta bowls as "cruel".

From yahoo answers.
One interesting fact: the long fins on domesticated bettas are actually a dominant trait, but it's incredibly rare to find them in nature because the long fins really slow them down and they get picked off by predators.

Contrary to popular beleif, as said above this post, bettas DO NOT come from mud puddles. They come from Thailand (used to be called Siam, hence "Siamese Fighting Fish") and live in rice paddies, these usually are a good 12 inches deep and contain upwards of 50 gallons of water in each, they are not puddles in the slightest.

If you want, check out some nano aquariums, they make these cube tanks that look pretty trick.

fred appears to be fine today, he has been eating and swimming like normal.

i am wondering if there some kind of contaminant in their last bowl change?

gonna keep an eye on him for sure. idk anything about fish or fish tanks, obviously. i may get a little 10 gallon tank and give him more space. i gotta find a place to put it first. :eyesmoke:

biggest thing about fish is don't overfeed em. Just makes the water funky. Don't feed em more than he can eat in 30 seconds
