Ptsd..........

Having my father suddenly taken from me when I was 9 gave me a bad case of PTSD, people who deny that this condition exists have never experienced real pain..fear..sadness...loneliness..confusion..doubt..or their in serious denial....

When something seriously fucked up suddenly rips ur whole world apart it's not all in ur head...

Many of those that see combat for extended periods come back with not only PTSD, but a lost sense of "life", or purpose. I am very close with a group of long time SF guys (20 yrs) and NOTHING gets them "up" anymore. They fear nothing, nothing gets their adrenaline going, and they haven't much motivation. Compound that with the desire to drink alcohol to kill time and wash away the memories and it can get bad. They want to go back because it's the only thing that excites them, and after spending so much time fighting for their lives and those of their brothers, it's all they know. Most cannot even imagine what it would be like going building to building clearing shitboxes in the desert where at any turn there could be a group with AK47's or worse ready to shoot at you for hours a day, day after day. "Nam was hidden surprises, booby traps, Charlie hiding in the bush... then, what, you come back and try to get a job at Home Depot? Those few bastards getting rich off the backs of the bruised are the real terrorists. I lost my brother to this last decade of war, and he's still alive.

Vets, please don't drink your problems away. Be strong, find something you truly enjoy doing and try to talk about it with others who know what you are going through.

You can thank the US government for widespread PTSD throughout returning veterans, I just read about a guy who is serving on his 9th deployment, what the fuck? The military just uses these guys and throws them away like garbage, the way veterans affairs are handled after their service proves this fact.

The military is a sham and it's reprehensible how they use people with limited options to forward an agenda.

i especially agree with the bolded. if there is any real scandal going on right now, it is how long it takes veterans to receive benefits and how the whole process is handled (still on paper!).

thanks, JJ, for starting this thread. i have a few patients with PTSD and it is just unimaginable what these people are going through with so little help from the people who sent them there.

As much as I hate what the military stands for and perpetuates, most of these guys truly don't have any other option.. It's prison, homelessness, or military. In life, nobody will give a fuck about you but you. If that was the decision I was facing (luckily it hasn't reached that point yet), I would join the military. Maybe it's even a good thing these types of people exist in the military.. they might even save somebody's life one day by not impulsively pulling the trigger because they were spooked by something, Kubrick and Stone are good at portraying that sense of emotion in their films.

How old is that statistic? That was what I was told when I joined the AF. Little did I know that I would be sent to a combative unit; doing convoys, pulling security for our own job sites outside the wire, clearing buildings occasionally, other things I don't really want to go into.

It may be a satistic, and I just looked it up and it ranges from 1-10%. Also, just because you yourself see combat doesn't disproof the 'satistic'. When you join the military, you most likely will never see combat.

I don't have ptsd but I suffer from extreme anxiety and agoraphobia , they kinda go hand in hand and similar symptoms. I so feel for anyone who has any mental issues that are often overlooked or given the "suck it up" attitude
