In my last setup the noise was unbelievable anyone got any recommendation on equipment and that they could tell to cut this down? would be most helpful thanks.

I have found that with basic fans, a lot of the noise has to do with vibration. Make sure the fan is resting on something dense enough to absorb that. If you hold the fan and it is less noisy, that is the issue. If is still noisy, then get a better fan.

Vortex... buy fans double the size needed then turn down with a speed controller... whisper quiet.
Need 300 cfm moved? Buy a Vortex 747 and turn it down to about 1/2.

Yeah, the fact that you can always use it for larger project later is a plus.
For short term though, when you turn a fan down 50% it is much much more quiet.
350 cfm going through a 6 inch fan sounds like a wind tunnel... 350 going through an 8 inch is much much more quiet.

It's not that vortex is quiet. It's that a large fan ran at a slow speed is quiet.

You can buy an air duct muffler from Home Depot I believe. Hang them both from the ceiling with those black rubber straps.

Bungee cords hung from eye hooks..crank a 12in fan all the way and all you'll hear is 'shhhhhhhhh'...

that was exactly what i had to say, suspend if from an elastic material.. it will absorb the vibrations.. this is much like they do in commercial air ducts only they suspend if from a steel rod with springs in it.. also used in marine engineering for sound detention as in subs.

Bungee Cords work fantastic.
Home Depot sell a jug of them for 10 bucks that are perfect for the job.
There are several lengths up to like 36" and some other neat stuff in there.

J just saw the sickest stand up fan. I know you all are talking about inlines. Dyson makes a bladeless fan. It kicks and is very quiet. Its just rediculous in price. $450. First time I ever seen one of those in person.

I like the c.a.p. inline fans. Half the price of vortex and has a 5 year warranty. Runs maybe 5 cfms less than vortex. So if you buy another one 5 years later. You will have spent the same as one vortex (10 year warranty).

Yeah the hum is annoying. I still sit my fans on surfaces... one sits on the roof of a flower tent.. two sit on insulation in the attic. one is suspended for convenience.
I wrap my fans in soft material. The ones in the attic are wrapped with old pillows duct taped around them. It looks pretty shitty but no vibrations and it absorbs the wind noise too. The one on the tent is wrapped in duct insulation.

What I'm saying is, ime, insulating the fan sitting on a surface that is not hard works better for the vibration and does more for mechanical and wind noise.
of course, depending on your setup hqnging might be more cinvenient.

even if you do hang though... insulating the fan will help with noise.some people build boxes around the fan and insulate... you czn use blankets, pillows, duct indulstion, whatever.

The large fan turned down though... that is key. I've ran 4,6,8 and 10 in fans in many different ways. Large fan with lower speed is going to do more for the win and mechanical sound than anything;;

Also, usig all insulated ducting makes a difference.
