600w hps air cooled ventilation questions

Hello everybody hope all is well :weed:

*3x3x6 grow tent, thinking of growing six plants

I am going to run a 600w hps, i want the setup to be air cooled so the i'm just deciding on the hood/housing for the lighting, my inquiry lies within the sizing of the duct opening. i have read that you could never have to much ventilation.

right away i went and added the 8 inch system to my cart, but started to have my doubts, maybe its just too much.

the 6 inch inline - i am looking at is rated 424 CFM, 110 watts
the 8 inch - this one is 590 CFM, 170 watts

thank you in advance for looking!

An 8 inch fan for a 600w and 3x3 room might just be overkill. A 6 inch will work great and its cheaper
yeah i thought so... could any harm come from running the 8 inch do you think?, it will be controlled by a remote, the speed of the fan...
sometimes i think its nice to have that power on reserve, for a hot day or extra smelly strains, what are your thoughts?

I am working in a small space similar to yours mine is 3x4x8 feet. It's 4' tall....
I use a 400 Watt light with a dual ballast for HID/HPS use.
600 watts makes my space run in the High 80's dangerously high in my opinion.
with the 400 I maintain a temp 81-84 degrees under the light with 55-59% humidity.
My night temp is 76-77 with 65% humidity

I have a 6" 400 CFM fan pulling in cold Air
and a 4" 160 CFM fan pulling thru light hood and exhausting somewhere else.

so in my case I need two fans intake and exhaust to maintain a good environment, YMMV.

how you doin dogenzengi :peace:

see those temps are what make me worry and lean toward having the 8 inch, but as chronicgrow said, the 6 inch should be more than enough as it does have 424 CFM, and on a hot day ac is available to me... maybe im overthinking this lol

reguardless if you use an 8" or 6" you ARE going to run into heat issues in HPS. I run a 4x4x7 tent (basement grow) with a 6" ac tube xl hood w/6" 440cfm ventech fan 100%, a 420 cfm intake fan 80%, 420 cfm exhaust fan 100%, 3 5" clip fans blowing up from tent floor thru canopy, and an 18" fan blowing across the underside of the ac tube/hood to help eliminate hot pocket and im still running at 81*. im getting a portable ac unit to help with the temps. w/o the 18" fan I was running 86*. see my grow link in my sig for some details.

There is no such thing as overkill in this game. You can always use a fan controller if ya fan pulls too much. Better to have that increased power available to use than not have it. So many times I have psoted about my shed full of under powered, low-medium quality equipment that just doesn't fulfill my needs. I know the setup costs are high for first timers but try to buy the best mate now to save in the long run. Good luck mate.

if you run a cool tube you can get away with a 4" rvk so long as you kep the ducting short and vent to outside.

if not venting outside it doesn't really matter what size fan you use because you will be drawing in hot air. if money is no object you might as well go for the 8" it is more flexible and on a speed controller will run quieter than a 6".

if running an air cooled hood type reflector you will need at least a 6".

personally if money were no object i would try and get a 4x4x6.6 tent, air cooled hooded reflector an 8" rvk with speed controller.

demon, i see what your saying, regardless of size im still pulling in whatever temp is outside the tent. summer months, i do have an air conditioner in the room so im sure that will help. the way you have your fans setup sounds like it would air circulation a lot in my case, thank you for reply

mrmeangreen, i think your right i rather spend the additional 20 bucks and get the 8 inch and dial it down, if i ever need more its there. thanks for the luck!

ghp, i stayed away from cool tubes, because the reviews, commments, and overall when i research them, people arent too happy with them, im willing to do 4x4, but people have stated that with 3x3 the 600 will give your more wattage per foot, if i go 4x4 with the 600, wont i lose wattage or lumens per foot, or the foot isnt that big a deal, its just for better ventilation? the extra foot seems worth it, just want to get as much as i can out of the light for a good yield

good luck have faith and good Karma.

yes thats what seems to be suggested, with a 3x3 id be looking at around 67 watts per sq foot, so maybe thats optimal, for 6 plants hempy style

also anybody... im having trouble understanding the order of how things should ventilate, what goes before what and where, inside or out of tent, anyway you guys can help me with this, i googled for pics so i can visually understand it but nada... thanks:peace:

intake fan down low, exhaust up high opposite side of tent than the intake. I PULL air thru my cool tube vs pushing air. I found NO temp change in push vs pull. im sure I have a ton of pics in my grow thread in the beginning of the thread. I like whoring out my grow with pics and posts. lol

this is how i set up 2, it would be the same with using just one.

i prefer to have the fan blowing air through the lights, i find it keeps them cooler than sucking the air out. if you want to have the fan blowing instead of sucking try and keep the ducting short as possible.

you can see in the pic i have filter-duct-fan-duct-light-duct-light-duct and out. many people prefer to use the fan at the end last thing on the list and i think the fans are actually supposed to be used like that but i have many successful grows that say you dont have to.
