can u cut the fan leaves off

Plants need the fan leaves to process energy. The only time you should do this is when you have a fan leaf is blocking the light to a budsite and resists being bent out of the way. A couple of leafs = no problem. All the fan leafs = sick plant.

The fan leaves supply the plant with sugars and many other things. You don't want to remove any fan leaves unless they are totally dead. When flowering stage comes along you will need to remove some if they start to yellow up but that is natural. Until then a healthy plant should be producing big green fan leaves which shouldn't be cut.

how do I trim leaf tips to alter the plant's visual profile? I saw someone mention this practice but I am unsure how much is ok to trim.

Why? are you trying to make your plant look like something else....I wouldn't recommend cutting leaves for visual effect
