Kona Gold vs Hawaiian Sativa

Hello hello all. I have been trying to locate some Kona Gold seeds for a while with no luck. I have read many entries about kona gold just being localy grow weed from the Kona area of Hawaii, some say it is a land race of Hawaii and some say that it does not exist. When looking at where the Hawaiian Sativa seeds from federation seeds come from (Mauna Kea) it apperas they would be Kona Gold seeds. What do you all think? Where can I find Kona Gold seeds? Any body from the Islands know?

Ahh yes. Good ol Highgrade. I got so excited when I found it on there. I must have wrote them 7+ emails before admitting to myself it was a dead end. I still got two sticks in the fire though. Actually...... 3. There is always American Airlines.

I got High Grade seeds Kona Gold.....it was pretty good, but not what i was looking for. I detect a similarity in many High Grade seed strains....i think they might have used their Northern Lights to cross and stabilize alot of their varieties, but cant be sure. I dont like their NL much, one of the worst i tried so far....kinda lemony fruity, but standard not in a special way! NL is supposed to be skunky, hashy, piney, fruity.

If you can get Federation Hawaiian Sativa, do that, as i ran that about 10 years ago, and it was great.....hawaiian looking structure and budding....plus great flavors, herbal and fruity, but different than others!
Do you have info on where to get it?

I live on Big Island, and hawaiian strains were shut out of the market years back when some superior white widow clones came here! I hate you widow!!!!! Older growers couldn't compete with consistent chronic super potent crystally buds of the widow, and most older strains went by-by! This suck for locals in Hawai'i as well as people in Cali! Older "better" strains might have not been as consistant, cause mostly from seed, not clone, so you would get steller variations along with ok ones. Problem is they couldn't sell the ok stuff anymore, so no more ultra strains here or Cali! True bummer!

I know of one web site that has Hawaiian Sativa seeds (don't know the breeder) and a dispensary near L.A that has seeds from SOHUM seed collective. This is there description. "Brought over from Kona in the early 80's and has been tossed around the family for a few decades. A real solid strain with the great smell and taste of the islands. A rich flavorful smoke." I have almost succeed in getting a clone of the Kona Gold pheno I like from a dispensary but don't yet have it my hands. Do you by chance have access to any good Hawaiian beans or are they really that rare now? I have read some depressing things about the old Hawaiian strains. I just got hold of some Oaxacan highland seeds from the mid 70's. They are once removed. Grown once in Nor Cal and I got some offspring. I cant wait for that grow. Old genetics with flavor!

Its true, sad, but true......its very hard to find good old hawaiian genetics!!!! But i still believe their are some out there!?!
Problem was(is) the older growers with the genetics either got too old to grow, or that widow i was talking about took them out!

The description you quoted is pretty much spot on!
So what web site has hawaiian sativa??
I am always looking for old genetics, so we should keep in touch, in case we need to share some genetics.

The SOHUM seeds sound best but they are only available through the dispensaries in Ca. I may just have to make the trip over to west Hollywood to buy some SOHUM seeds of Hawaiian Sativa. And again, I am still hoping on getting my hot little hands on the pheno of Kona Gold that I have had a know is good. You are welcome to keep in touch. I am always interested in preserving old genetics while enjoying all the new ones. Although I must say the Kona Gold has got me twisted. By far the best smoke to date. Yes seeds can be shipped here no problem......i made some seeds of High Grade's Kona Gold. Its super resinous, and super stinky, like cedar and lemons, and is a very good strain.......and yes the glands turn clear gold when done.
Do you have problems with beans shipped to you?

So far I have received one package from Attitude Seeds and I have received one from Single Seed Center. They both sowed up on time and in good condition. I have also received a few packages from other locations in the US. When you say you made seeds, did you make feminized seeds or use a different strain for the male?

They are regular seeds. They are the continued line from High Grade Seeds. Not sure how much work was done on this strain prior to me getting it.....but my f2's i guess you could say.

I've got some good friends on the Big Island, and they've ran it for years.

Thing is, it needs the unique environment of Hawaii, to reach it's full potential, and even if you live in Hawaii, it's not an easy plant to grow... They need to grow for a very long time before the plant matures, and they get HUGE-



The legend goes, a stoner from Kona brought a bag of Colombian Gold with him on a visit to his parents house in Kona. There was a big rock on their property he used to sit on to roll and smoke joints. He threw a few seeds over his shoulder...

A few years later he returned for a visit and found a few trees growing next to his favorite rock- Kona Gold was born...

European explorers always carried hemp seeds with them, and planted them everywhere they went, so they could come back later, and make rope for their sailing ships.



But the legendary Hawaiian Cannabis strains of the 60's and 70's, were either freaky examples, or land race strains from other countries that happened to grow really well in Hawaii. And if you happen to actually get some of those really dynamite Kona Gold seeds, they won't ever be that great, unless you happen to live in a tropical climate, and grow enough to find something special.




And yeah, I did throw something out there about some guy, who's well known on the Big Island

I don't know what the true definition of a landrace strain, I've always thought it meant a strain that had acclimatized to the surrounding environment.. I enjoy growing land races of all types mainly Mexican and Columbian I also have some jamaican...you make it sound as if you don't grow?

I live on the Big Island over twenty years.......most local strains are dissappearing unfortunately.
Also, somewhat of a myth......Hawaiian strains, i have grown from outdoors to indoors, from Hawai'i to the east coast, where i grew them indoors and out. I had no diminished qualities wherever grown. Sun is sun.
Now, the main key ingredient that made Hawaiian weed legendary was more the soil and the co2 enriched trade winds that dominate the weather pattern. Sure the climate aint bad either. But like many great sweet spots, there is a common soil. Volcanic soil! South America, also volcanic soil, and a few other sweet spots, but since i suck at geography, i cant be sure of others.
Also macadamia nut compost is unreal!
I also think that people who enjoy cannabis in Hawai'i, throughly enjoy getting high, cause your in the best place to enjoy it. That leads to many good growers and breeders.....more than other places.

Big sativa strains always do much better when grown outdoors near the equator, mainly due to the sunrise and sunset times, and steady year round climate. They can take forever to fully mature.
Can you grow them indoors? Sure, but it just isn't the same-


In my opinion, a cross is definitely a better option indoors, and outdoors, if you happen to be growing it north of the tropics-

I met up with Gooey on Oahu, several years back. He's one hell of a nice guy He turned me on to a pack of Goo-thunder, and we found some Freaks-

I don't know, being an outdoor and indoor grower I choose indoor, I can match or even exceed the lumen output of the sun, keep all variables in check like temp humidity and light period I can get as close to its ideal environment possible indoors, possibly much better than where it actually came from..as I said I grow landraces and while they do take forever (my longest goes 22 weeks or so) I definately wouldn't swap out for faster hybrids....I would like to try some good indicas though just haven't gotten around to it..

Maybe on only the purest sativa's.......but most Hawaiian strains are sativa hybids or sativa that have acclimated. See Hawai'i is equitorial so when equitorial sativa's come here, the change. We have sun hours that vary enough to give us seasons. About 13:5 hours in peak summer to aroung 11 hours in winter. That means that for six or slightly more months of the years plant(sativa's also) bud very quickly, half the normal time. This allowa Hawaiian stavia's n hybrids to have a shorter flower period genetically altered by acclimation. We used to have 90 day wonders from seed.
These acclimated genes do awesome anywhere as long as you lived in Hawai'i and know the strains but like a strain like kona gold would do much better and finish way faster than say if it came from columbian gold. That's the beauty of Hawaiian seasons.
