Police believe that after he was ordered to leave Cambodia, Sohn went to Thailand but was able to re-enter the Kingdom later at the border near Poipet.
Seila Samleang, country director of APLE, called the arrest “a great solution for Cambodian children. […] We hope that the Australian government will do their part and take responsibility in preventing child sex exploitation in developing countries.

Convicted pedophile is arrested once again

A convicted pedophile given a suspended prison sentence and ordered to leave Cambodia last August was re-arrested last week in Siem Reap and will be deported to his home country of Australia, a senior anti-human trafficking official at the Ministry of Interior said yesterday.

Major-General Pol Pithey, chief of the anti-human trafficking police, said Charles Sohn, 39, a Korean-Australian, was re-arrested last Sunday after being sighted in Siem Reap.

“This man had previously been arrested, convicted and given a three-year suspended sentence,” he said. “The court ordered that he be deported . . . but he escaped to stay illegally in Siem Reap province. He has no valid passport now. He will be deported from Cambodia this week.”

Sohn was arrested in his rental house in Poipet in February, and found guilty of sexually assaulting two girls, aged six and 10. Police believe that after he was ordered to leave Cambodia, Sohn went to Thailand but was able to re-enter the Kingdom later at the border near Poipet.

Seila Samleang, country director of NGO Action pour les Enfants, said Sohn was arrested last week at a bus station in Siem Reap with a small amount of marijuana, a detail police confirmed.

“This [arrest] is a great solution for Cambodian children,” Samleang said. “We hope that the Australian government will do their part and take responsibility in preventing child sex exploitation in developing countries by deporting Mr Sohn to his home country, where the relevant authorities can prevent him from abusing children
Why deport him back here? we don't want him, lock him up where the offence was committed... Way to show your butthurt while advocating for greater government intervention you oxymoronic AnarChist*...

Well, ignoring the fact that this thread is here obviously PURELY to poke an Aussie. I just wanted to add a couple of points.

1) Australia was one of the first countries to prosecute its citizens that commit child sex offenses overseas.
2) Just because Australian authorities are tackling the problem head on and throwing a light on it does not mean that its any more of an issue than anywhere else.
3) As pointed out by others, the age of consent and the age someone is considered an adult in relation to sexuality is much higher in Australia than countries like say, Mexico. An easy way to reduce the amount of convicted child pedophiles would be to follow Mexico's relaxed stance and just call anyone over 14 a consenting adult.
4) Statistics on child sex offenders are very hard to obtain due to the secretive nature. Any statistics are heavily reliant on those willing to come forward as victims, and those that have actually been caught. Any insinuation that Australia is worse than any other country or has a higher rate is merely a guess at best.

Further more, using a topic like this as a personal vendetta does nothing but undermine yourself. I'm not sure why the admins have let this thread continue this far. I've been an active member in the MJ community for many years and have participated in the majority of the community forums. I always found myself back here browsing these boards and they have some really good information. I decided to register and I found this thread because I searched for Australia.

I'm pretty disappointed that this kind of banter and flaming could continue for 21 pages. I wont post in this thread any more, and if this is the kind of behavior (by well established members) that's left to go unchecked I might find myself abandoning my account. By and large, I thought this place had some pretty decent members and some good advice and ideas going back and forth. I hope the Admins act soon.
