Can your room handle the heat of HID light? The problem with moving to a more legit light setup is that the actual light is usually only the first in a long series of purchases to make everything work the way you want it.

It's a closet about 3 foot deep by six foot tall by six foot long with the vented doors I figure with a fan I will be ok right?

You can get dense sticky frosty stank dank with CFL, HID, and LED. CFLs must be within inches depending on wattage to work. They are cheap, run cool, fit into tight spaces, good supplemental light for hard to reach places, and can provide the right spectrum!!! Show me a pic of your set up and I'll drop some knowledge on ya. If you want cheap/descent HID ebay IPOWER bundles.

Look at some of my other posts and you can see my prob is I let my main plant get six foot high and I will be lucky to get a ounce off it I almost just want to throw it away. I have a four foot 36 watt two bulb fluorescent hanging light then I have six 26 watt (100w) cfl 2400k lights hung all over. My grow box is four 6400k lights its 3x3x4 this was told to me to be sour diesel but I started it from a seed so idk what I'm really growing just know its the best bud I have seen around my state.

You gotta start right from the get go! when vegging I like to use a 2(6500k):1(2700k) blue to red ratio. Keep em close to prevent stretching...but not too close to burn. If you want to keep them short look into LST AND topping. The longer you veg the bigger the plants will be...also strain dependent. In your current situation you can cut the bottom third of the plant and focus your light on the top colas. In your small space I would stick to CFLs and/or T5s.

Yea the running temp on the 400w was like 140 degrees way to hot for my closet. I just want better quicker results this first plant has been growing since May and I have had every problem you could think of light leaks bad timer this plants been though hell and still looks supper healthy. But this is my first grow I lst the second plant it will have three colas and have two more clones going I will get it eventually. What your opinion on the led light boards they have on ebay just look like not enough light in my opinion.

You can get 40w to 80w off the shelf induction lights with an e27 fitting that are self ballasted

Heres a 40w http://www.brightmax.net/html_products/Self-ballast-Series-98.html

but they do make 80w, I have used 40w inductions and they out perform a 105w cfl, so I`d hazard a guess that an 80w would do the job of 1 200w cfl, they can get a bit pricey but not as expensive as buying led the heat is no where near as much as hps, do have a look if your thinking of getting a 400w hps then a 200 or 400w induction lamp might also be worth considering.

Look into Philips retro white 250W CMH. Best spectrum BY FAR when it comes to HID!!! Even runs a little cooler. It's all about usable spectrum....you can compare yourself.spectrum.jpg

CFL's are fair for vegging....Flowering.....eh..
Get 1 400watt conversion, veg with a MH then switch to HPS. That will blow CFL away.
These days I use CFL's to raise a few babies then thats at.

CMH>MH not even close. now where's my rep for increasing your quality and quantity!!! Plus You can veg and flower with CMH with great results. Saves $ when you only need 1 bulb.

Kona...thanks for the research idea. I've checked out the production large induction grow lights but my budget won't do the $1500. Plus. The Chinese web site isn't exactly English friendly but I'll get there. I am just finishing the last of my under the steps, 3x8 slanted roof grow ( thank God) with 1200 actual watts of CFl's. 400 above and 400 on each side. The heat is a bear. I struggled even with good quality intake and exhaust. My new 8x10 grow room is about 4 days from complete and I am pumped !! Post any new info you might get on the induction stuff. Peace & be kind.

It's not that growing with CFL's sucks. It's that you're doing it wrong. Iv'e checked out your pictures and your plants are stretched to shit. 6 is not near enough for what you are trying to do.

Head on over to the Indoor growing> LED light sub forum. Couple stickys with good well known companies and links to them. There is also a post on here somewhere with a guy running a test with those ebay LED's. I believe it's in the same area as above.

get a 135w mixed spec led ufo with the 3w diodes and add it to your cfl's
you can get them off ebay for around 80-100 bucks
it takes alot more than youd think to get a hps right
im running a 400w cool tube with a fan and filter in a small box almost 3'x4'
ambient heat isnt the only issue
you have to consider radiant aswell
i use this and if your not worried about a filter then you can just put a duct blower and some duct to vent it out of the grow space
cooltube ,ballast, bulb
and a 6" duct blower and ducting will probably be about 150 with free shippin

i agree. cfls will work fine if you have enough lumins and you use them right and get the correct spectrum. with proper airflow you can get then really close to your plants. plus, cfls have gotten really inexpensive. if you look at my avatar that was a cfl grow. and like somebody else said if you want to go to a HID setup those systems are pretty cheap now as well, you'll just have deal with the heat. good luck!
