True enough, but are we the ones with the moral authority to send that message? For that matter, is any member of the UN security council "without sin"? The security council members certainly had no problem carrying out their own genocides or using chemical weapons in the first world war or using nukes in the second world war.agreed 99%.
but we do need to send the message that gassing your own people is a big no-no.
Maybe I'm paranoid, but I doubt the Syrian government used their chemical weapons. For one thing, chemical weapons are unreliable and ineffective. Sure, you can gas a neighborhood but that is no guarantee that you will actually kill the intended targets. Chemical weapons cause significant collateral damage, and when you are fighting a civil war, PR is kind of important. The weather can change and disperse the weapon over other areas. Besides, Syria actually does have a pretty strong military. They have main battle tanks, jets and helicopters that can let loose significantly more intense and accurate firepower than a chemical shell would deliver. Only the rebels would gain from the use of chemical weapons, even if they used them on themselves. It would spark the international outrage they need to get the military aid they want.
