first grow light question

as the title states i have a question about lighting on my first grow... my room size is 6' x 4' x 6' ... i would ideally like to use a 100 watt hps setup with some side cfls. my main concern is heat well lack of it. my room is located in the basement and i will be venting air from outside however winter temps in my area drop well below freezing at night. would a 100 watt hps supply sufficient heat and light or will it turn the room into a hot box. any advice appreciated..

thanks

An 100w HPS would be a waste of time. Get a 1000w, and with outside air you are going to do great. When you are in veg you will be running 24 or 18 hrs on, so temp will not be an issue then, and as long as the room temp does not drop below 60 with the lights off, you are fine.

If you grow Indicas, or an Indica/Sativa strain with Indica being the dominant, you can expect a height of maybe 3 - 3.5', which should give you plenty of room. If you are growing Sativas or Sativa dominant. You might end up pushing it as you can expect 4' plants indoors.

I don't think you should get a 1000W. Get a 600W instead. They are more efficient than 1000W lamps, and are perfectly powerful enough for most farmers. As you say, 1000W need a fair amount of headroom too...certainly more than a 600W, particularly if in an air-cooled hood.

yah i have been looking at 600w hps because im worried about burning the leaves.. however will this supply enough heat, to heat the room sufficiently? the outside air i will be venting at times will be well below freezing..
thanks for the advice.

Why not just source your air from inside the basement? As long as the basement is ventilated it should be ok.

Your grow-room is the same size as my flower room. I've hung just about every kind of light possible in there, and this is what I've ended up with:

I have a 400w MH and a 600w HPS in easycool6 sealed light fixtures, and I have them moving back and forth on a light-mover. If you look at just about any professional grow room, you'll see a mix of HPS and MH as the dual light spectrum gives the best yield.

I vent with 240 CFM inline 6" fan in each fixture and have zero heat issues. I also have a 7" desk fan blowing through an 8" duct into the room.

with only a 6 foot ceiling. do you think a 1000 watt hps would burn the leaves
I doubt it.
What you want to do sounds similar to what I've got, except that my room is 4X8 and it's a 1kW MH rather than HPS. I've just got my mum in there bushing out again after taking a bunch of clones so the 1000W MH is overkill, but it does keep the room at about 66 just before the lights come on and about 75-77 just before they go out. It also keeps the chill out of the (concrete) basement floor but I still keep the pots on an upside down tray as a thermal break. I've got a 6" clip-on desk fan on low, blowing onto the glass to clear the warm air out of that space and, though I don't let the leaves actually touch the glass, they've grown to within an inch of it without burning. I have a 6' ceiling in there as well and it's more of a concern to get rid of the heat then to warm the room up.

The bars in the pic are just interference from the ballast, the pic is also darker than it is in person. For sccale, the biggest leaves in the pic are about 8" and the space is about 4" from the highest tip at the moment.
And yeah, those are space blankets - always meant to paint the walls white but never saw the need: this setup is more than enough to keep me stoned, which is all I'm looking for :)

thanks for the advice man sounds like we got a similar setup and its good to hear its working well.

your basement is only 6 feet tall? my basement is the tallest room in the house, being 6'4 i would get brain damage walking around in your basement.

you should consider using a light mover. When you move the light you get light everywhere, not just the tops of the plants. You can also eliminate hot spots, even though you have cool air coming in all the heat from the light is focused on one area when its stationary. With these benefits working together your yields with be huge!
