First Grow Outdoor UK - Phase II

Hi all,

Well here is my often promised but long overdue grow journal for my Purple Power plants. I have called this journal First Grow Outdoor UK - "Phase II" as although my Cinammon plants had a couple of weeks head start, I'm treating the whole grow as one. I'll keep the journals separate though to avoid any confusion (on my part that is LOL). OK, so what am I growing this time:

Purple Power

Flowering period: 6- 7 weeks
Yield: Fast, maximum Harvest outdoors
Harvest: Half End September (Holland)

Type : 90% Sativa
Stability: 40%
NOT recommended for indoor growing.

For purple & lavender !

A very popular early and fast flowering variety for outdoor growing. Buds become purple to lavender-blue. Flowering starts mid-July to the beginning of August in Holland.

So yet another crazy attempt to grow Sativa outside in the UK. The seeds were produced by femaleseeds.nl (they are feminized seeds), and supplied by salviaonline.co.uk. I can heartily recommend both companies by the way, especially salviaonline.co.uk for their excellent, speedy and friendly / helpful service. You may also be interested in this qoute from the femaleseeds.nl website:

"Our outdoor strains are specially developed for countries with a colder and short summer, like Holland."

Worried I have left it VERY late, but Jim at salviaonline assures me there is plenty of time. I think I mentioned this in my other grow journal, but I have seen these seeds advertised on another website which states that they were specially produced to react to low intensity light, and that they happily flower in the shade or under fluorescent lights. Given the state of our weather, I hope they're right.

Soil Mix

My soil mix is the same as I'm now using for my Cinammon plants, ie professional compost (which contains nutrients and trace elements - NOT Miracle Grow) with about 20 to 25 per cent perlite.

Germination

As usual I simply popped the seeds straight into the soil, about couple of millimetres down, covered, watered lightly and four days later all four seedlings emerged.

Light etc

With my Cinammon plants I had them under fluorescent lights 24/7 for the first four or five days; then outside sun during the day / fluorescent lights by night for another four or five days; and thereafter outside 24/7.

This time I put the Purple Power outside 24/7 a day after they emerged (the weather was super, so I reckoned they'd be fine).

Progress To Date

Although the seedlings look healthy, and have not stretched nearly as much as my Cinammon did in the first week, growth was much slower for the first few days. I put this down to at least one, but possibly two factors:

1. The seedlings were outside from about day 2 and, therefore, didn't get the benefit of the fluorescent lights by night; and

2. This is only a possibility - the Cinammon seedlings were reared in Miracle Grow Moisture Control compost. Could this have helped them on their way? I don't know, but I certainly would have concerns about using Miracle Grow for the entire grow, hence why I changed it for a more basic but quality compost.

Current Position

I have now changed my tactics and bring the Purple Power seedlings in under fluorescent lights at night and they are beginning to catch up. I reckon I'll keep doing this and maybe even rig up a few lights somewhere so I can continue to make sure they get as much light as possible until they are ready to flower. Remember, they will likely flower early, and have a short flowering period, so I want to get them as big as possible before that happens given how late in the year it's getting now. A few pics just to let you see how they look:

Pic 1 - 5 Days

Sorry this one's a bit dark, but you can see the variation in the seedlings here - the one in the right foreground has a purple stem whereas the others are green.

Pic 2 - 7 Days

Pic 3 - 7 Days

The brown areas on some of the leaves is just a bit of soil dust that blew in from the field next door presumably (I heard the tractor a while ago). I'll wipe it off later ...

BTW, I rubbed a couple of the leaves today and the smell left on my fingers was absolutely beautiful, like a sweet grapefruit. I really hope these work out - if the buds are anything like that ... WOW, can't wait LOL.

Anyway, hope this has been of some interest. As usual, grateful for your comments. Speak to you later ...

looking good,
nice green leaves and coming along nicely.

i think you are right to try and give them as much light as possible till you flower it should help bulk them up.

interesting to see if they finish before winter. good luck with them

Hi UKCyrus, thanks for stopping by and for the comments. Never thought I'd see a marijuana plant with sunburn LOL, but there you have it. My Cinammon plants seem to be overly sensitive to the sun - the least bit of water on the leaves when the sun comes up, or after a shower, and they get frazzled. Even a long day in the sun with no rain and they suffer.

I was reading a website the other day (unfortunately I can't remember where) which was talking about sunburn. It makes perfect sense when you think about it - the point was that in the wild, or in a more natural environment, few plants will get the sun all day long and will have at least a little shade from other plants, trees and the like from time to time. So it was basically saying that even marijuana plants can suffer from too much sun. I have learned my lesson anyway. The black pots weren't helping either, so another no-no from now on.

Will be updating this journal later today if you want to take a look.

Thanks again for your interest, and glad my post helped you out.

Hi crazy-mental, nice to see you. These are Purple Power, feminized from femaleseeds.nl. They are 90% Sativa and are specially designed to grow in cooler, wetter climates (ie Holland LOL). I'm in Northern Ireland, and we've been really lucky with plenty of sun for the last few weeks, but normally we get a lot of rain. Fingers crossed, it may be a good Summer for us both ;)

By the way, the seed have been outside pretty much 24/7 since about 2 days old and they are thriving. I'm just this minute doing an update (19 days old today) so check back shortly to see how they are doing (some nice pics for you). You may also be interested to know I have 4 Cinammon on the go (another 90% Sativa strain) and they are 38 days old. See my grow journal here for pics taken yesterday: https://www.rollitup.org/grow-journals/75638-first-grow-outdoor-uk.html All my plants are growing in pots in the back garden.

What strain are you growing yourself? What stage are they at and are they in pots or in the ground? Do you have a grow journal? It would be great to be able compare notes and watch how each other's plants are doing.

Once again thanks for stopping by. Hope you can come back soon to see my update ;)

Greetings all,

Another long overdue update - 19 days old today. I will keep this brief as I really don't have anything exciting to tell you other than the fact that my little Purple Power plants are thriving (and that's pretty exciting LOL) - the pics will hopefully speak for themselves:

Please don't laugh at the pipe cleaners (LOL - it's OK for me to laugh). They aren't actually required, I just put them there the other day when it was particularly windy so they could stay out safely, and I never got round to taking them off again. Will disappear in a day or two when I re-pot (see below).

Dimensions might help - the tallest plant is around 61/2 inches, the smallest 51/2 inches. You can see that they did stretch a little in the early days, although when they're re-potted I will obviously raise the soil level. The stems above the cotyls are nice and sturdy so that's the main thing. They are just about ready to re-pot now, but it's a lovely sunny day here today so I'll probably leave it for a couple more days.

I reckon I have around 4 to 6 weeks (hopefully 6) of vegging left before these babies start to flower. Not a lot, but as long as the weather stays reasonably good I think it will be enough. As I think I said before, the dealer I bought the seeds from reckoned it would be plenty of time and said they will really take off during flowering, so fingers crossed.

Just a re-cap on my grow so far - germinated in pots (4 days to sprout), outside 24/7 from day 2 apart from inside at night under a fluorescent light from about day 7 to about day 12 (that's when they stretched as my light isn't the right colour). No problems to date and I'm happy :)

Any comments or suggestions will be very gratefully received as usual. Let me know if I've left anything out ;)

Hey UKcyrus, thanks for the comments and for the excellent tip (Rep+). I would love to do that as these plants need a little catching up to get them ready for flowering (could be as early as mid-July). Of course with a good lamp I might even be able to hold off flowering a bit too. They only take 6-7 weeks to finish so some scope there. Then again I might end up having to buy a light to finisih the flowering indoors if I'm not careful LOL. Trying to do this on a shoestring, so I'll have a good think about what's going to work out best all round.

Thanks again for stopping by. Catch you later ;)
