First time grow. Indoor closet. Need advice!

Hey all,

Im about to buy supplies for my first grow ever and I definately could use some advice, from the experts. To start off, my knowledge of growing is very limited, I know that I need two sets of lights, one for the first phase when their babies, then lights for the second phase when they grow up. I also know the first step is to germinate, I think Im going to skip the paper towel method as I've heard you can risk damaging the seeds. I'm definitely not looking for a fancy setup at all, the simpler, the better. I know I could get better yields, all that, with better methods but these herbs would be for me only (medicinal purposes) so Im not too worried about that. I have a closet its about 3X3X7. Give or take. Its basically a smaller walk-in closet.

Since Im growing for medicinal purposes I am going to want a harvest. I also know I need to separate the two plant phases, and cannot let the light from one phase touch the other. I am planning on buying fans and using mylar for reflection. Other than that though I really dont know the specific wattage I need or the names of both sets of lights (CFL I know). And all the details in between I could really use some aid with. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Read all the articles on this site that you can, you'll learn a lot. You can raise a seedling with a couple CFL's while you get your closet ready. I'd just paint the closet with a flat white paint for now. Have fun!

1) Soil
2) Containers
3) 400w for flowering High pressure sodium. 4 bulb T5 lighting for vegging (either 2 foot or 4 foot fixture)
4) Carbon Filter and Inline fan for exhaust, also might need small air intake fan.
5) Grow tent for flowering.
6) Timers, Chains, extention cables, and power strips with surge protection.

Should be able to setup both grow rooms for less than 700 bucks with this method and be getting big fat nuggets.

if you aren't able to exhaust into another room or outside you may want to look into getting like 6-8 25-55 watt CFLS. get 3 'Y' socket adapters and a clamp light... mount 4 CFLS... get a couple desk lamps or clamp lamps for side lighting.. if you go CFL method its best to surround your plant on all sides with lights.. also keep them 2"-4" away for maximum light without burning leaves.

I've got a 2 x 2 x 5 area I'm using CFLs to grow currently.. using about 200watts seems sufficient for this space. you will probably need closer to 300watts of CFLS if you wanted to flower your whole closet.

Thanks for the reply beat grow, some great information for sure. I am, however, on a pretty tight budget, Im talking like <$200. Im not going to use grow tents, I know their useful though. And for exhaust fans I think Im going to bypass that inline fan, not sure though. Everything else though looks good, definately can omve forward a bit now.

Dude just save more money then because you I will be dissapointed on your end product. Quality seeds cost $10 + each, pots, soil, nutes, intake air, outtake air, the air movement in the area, diy co2 system, lights alone will run you $100. Then all the other stuff involved.its not cheap. Save up $1000 at least and you could grow it well.

Don't read this forum to learn about growing. Stay away from cannabis specific forums if you can. They are way too full of conjecture, misinformation and snake oil products.

Get a book on basic plant biology. Learn about photosynthesis, transpiration & respiration and plant nutrition. Know what you are doing. Its pretty basic stuff. Learn what a plant needs and the why's and how's and you'll be way ahead of the pack.

Yea, I hear ya man. Seems like from what I've been hearing theres varying levels of opinions, can be confusing sometimes. Theres this one book I forgot the author but people call it like the "bible of growing bud" so ill try n check that out. I just dont believe it has to cost so much money to grow a plant lol, but I could be wrong, well see. Appreciate the input myob, thanks.
