Trying to best lay out my CFLs

Hey guys. I'm starting my first grows soon. I have built to fit in my closet a tent of PVC and panda film, with good ventilation etc. I'd like to go HPS after a while when I have the chance, but for the time being I'm using CFLs, because freaking cheap.

Costco currently has a massssssive sale on CFLs. 6 packs of 23w felts (2700k) are ~4 bucks after tax, so I got like 20 boxes (I use them around the house too) as well as a metric fuckton of 13 watters (which i doubt I'll use during growing, but theyre available). Anyways, here's my set up. Tent is 2x5' (just shy of 5' really). I have 2 scrog nets set up, although I may mainline as well/instead/godblessexperimentation. For reference, you can see one of these with my proposed layout below. Theyre about 22" square. I have 2 of these, each with one plant growing underneath [Each row of lights (6 bulbs) costs me ~10 dollars (4 for bulbs, 4 for the lamp bases, and 2 for the splitters). As shown below I'm looking at 2 rows per plant (so 276w actual per), but I might consider moving the rows towards the outside and doing a third pair in the middle, which would be 690W total, or 345w per plant. I'm planning on wiring it up so individual pairs of bulbs (any specific lamp base) can be turned on/off at will, because I don't need anywhere near that much juice firing when they're first going etc. I am planning on building the frame(s) they are mounted in out of hardwood plywood wrapped in either pandafilm or mylar. I have an excess of both films as well as the wood so this is no added cost to me. I would then make a "reflector" (LOL) by simply tacking down either film over the top of the frame as well.

I was also considering slightly angling them. I know that the sides clearly give out significantly more light. I was thinking that by leaving them flat, the light projecting directly upwards would be angled right back at the bulb and pretty much be lost. By angling them just a few degrees so theyre not perfectly coplanar, I might be able to improve slightly the amount of light reflected back down at the plants, as well as just focus more light going down towards the core of the plant in the first place. Any input on this would be appreciated.

I guess what I'm really asking is if anyone can see a better layout for my bulbs, or sees any problems with my construction ideas as well as input on

If anyone is curious about other details, I'm growing Female Seeds' Iced Grapefruit, 2 at a time, each in a 5 gallon bucket. Using some ammended Nature's Way organic potting soil. Not sure on nutes yet. ~2'x5'x6' tent. I'd be curious if anyone has any estimates on yields for an average grow of this type, but I know thats not accurate for beans haha.

TL;DR Here's my suggested layout and construction, any input or suggestions would be appreciated.

Considerations
  • $10 a row for 6 cfls (2700k)
  • 138w per row
  • Made from 6" wide strips of plywood wrapped in mylar/pandafilm
  • Covered with mylar/pandafilm for a reflector
  • Angle them to improve light direction/amount reflected?

Thanks guys! :)

If you use Y connections on each of your light sockets, you get 12 CFLs per row, and they will be angled. I swear by the Y connectors, I personally use just one light dropped in from the top, Y to 2 Ys, leading to 4x42W surrounding the plant, with a few supplemental lights hanging from the sides and projected down. CFLs have to be incredibly close to be effective. You're probably much better off 1) using those 23W as supplementals, and getting some 42Ws, and 2) ditching the rows of lights for a custom built rig. If you check out SeeMoreBuds book, it shows how to build a lighting rig that holds 6 CFLs that surrounds your plant, and he uses them to stunning effect in the book/grow journal.

Haha no problems man. I had just walked out of the room and was like "Wait, I don't think I actually posted the damn picture!" lol.

I think you might catch my drift now, but just in case I'll clarify. By row i'm meaning one set of 3 bases/splitters and 6 bulbs. As far as angling, i meant in regards to them being coplanar with the net. So as it stands the one big porcelain base thats visible is straight up and down, and it shoots out straight sideways. I'm talking about angling it so it points ever so slightly downwards.

Also, re: the flat layout, remember that I'm doing either a scrog or mainline, so the top layout of my plants will be relatively flat rather than a big column in the middle. The thought with these boxes would be that I can just raise/lower them as needed to keep them the ideal distance from the plants

P1070404.jpgThis is what I did for lighting in my PVC/Panda tent. Each clamp light has a Y-connector with two bulbs in each. Also have room to add 2-3 more clamp lights. The PVC piece that the lights are clamped to has ratchet hangers on it, so I can raise and lower it like a normal light.

Wal-Mart also has 4 packs of 23W in both 2700K & 6500K (daylight) flavors...$5/4pk is what I paid
Thats definitely cheaper than most places. This costco deal is still crazy though. $3.60 a six pack before tax. I <3 costco. Shame they don't have 6500k bulbs too. I should check what I can get the 6500s for at a few other bulk places. I don't shop at Walmart/Sams club on principle, but their prices sure are nice.

Ah cool. Yeah, I have a few of those from an old quail brooder I had set up. I think I can get a lot more light in the same amount of room though using the flat layout. I like the pvc set up though, looks great!

I just came from Home Depot today; all of a sudden they lowered their prices also: $5.70 for a 4pk or 23W (both soft white & daylight)

I'm just waiting for the cost of LED bulbs that cost probably $0.50 to make to stop arbitrarily costing $12 a piece

I was toying with those socket type LED's but none of the commonly sold ones have the color temps or the lumen output yet...there are some crappy cheapo socket LED "grow bulbs" on amazon, but who trust that

the fixture allows you completely surround your plant, and is good for a small setup with 1 big plant and maybe 2-3 small ones.

That one seems awesome... Maybe ill go get the saw. :D

An advice if you want cheap bulbs with more power, from china on ebay i bought photo studio bulbs, 5500k 2x135w & 2700k 2x105w for 29£/40$(?)!

Yeah, I'm just more interested in the LED bulbs for lighting my house haha. They'll get that down in time. For now we're just being gouged because LED sounds fancy to your average joe :/
I'm planning on a custom heatsinked cree setup, either 250w or 360w per side later. I love wiring things and I'd love to build a set of growlights I could control from my phone or online somehow, just for fun. If i could do the same with watering etc, even better haha.

I've seen that fixture posted around here before, and my means of attaching the lights is exactly the same! Woot! Same porcelain base and everything haha. i don't think it would work as well on a scrog or mainline though. Regardless, its a super clever idea. Thanks for sharing it.

That's an awesome deal. I already have more 23w cfls than I could fit flat in my grow tent haha, but I'll take a look at those in case I need to replenish before I switch to LEDs.

if you threw splitters in all 5 sockets on that lamp... 10 bulbs... n split the splitters for 20 bulbs... would def love to see that done

Not sure if that would be safe running that much amperage. And doubt if the goosenecks could hold the weight. But it would look pretty crazy for sure.
