I disagree. The very existence of these theories and the persistence of even the discredited theories belies a strong current of dissent and skepticism on the part of the American people.

Of course bush stood to gain. He's a figurehead who could have made the resulting events take place. Here is my rebuttal:

Usāmah bin Muḥammad bin`Awaḍ bin Lādin was a CIA operative. Un-disputable, he worked with the CIA during the Cold War-era proxy war with the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. However, there is no evidence he cooperated with the agency since February 15, 1989, when the final Soviet troops re-deployed out of Afghanistan. In fact, after the mujahideen dissolved into chaos of internal struggle for control of the country, there is very little evidence of any cooperation with any foreign agents, including the CIA.

Bin Laden himself discounted the effect of U.S. involvement against the Soviets.

The Islamists who fought also believed that they were responsible for the fall of the Soviet Union. Osama bin Laden, for example, was asserting the credit for "the collapse of the Soviet Union ... goes to God and the mujahideen in Afghanistan ... the US had no mentionable role," but "collapse made the US more haughty and arrogant."

Alliances shift every day. Sometimes they are official and out in the open and sometimes they are discreet. Germany and Japan were both our enemies at one time, but are now staunch allies. France was our ally for a long time. But through it's actions, France was our enemy until recently. Remember 'freedom fries' and 'freedom kissing' your girlfriends? The French people got the message of the unofficial boycott and finally recognized the threat they face from the clash of civilizations. Now France is our ally once again.

The CIA has propped up and supported some of the most heinous, brutal dictators in recent history. Remember the photo of Donald Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam Hussein? Our hands are not clean by any means. The CIA would work with Satan himself to gain an advantage in any given situation.

In 1998 bin Laden appeared on my radar. I remember ABC News interviewed him in a cave somewhere. He claimed openly he would seek to "wage war against America."

In 1998, Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri co-signed a fatwa in the name of theWorld Islamic Front for Jihad Against Jews and Crusaders which declared the killing of the North Americans and their allies an "individual duty for every Muslim" to "liberate theal-Aqsa Mosque (in Jerusalem) and the holy mosque (in Mecca) from their grip". At the public announcement of the fatwa bin Laden announced that North Americans are "very easy targets." He told the attending journalists, "You will see the results of this in a very short time."

In response to the 1998 United States embassy bombings following the fatwa, Bill Clinton ordered a freeze on assets that could be linked to bin Laden and signed an executive order authorizing bin Laden's arrest or assasination.

I was neither surprised nor shocked on September 11, 2001. I did not know bin Laden was behind 9-11, but I believed the man when we vowed to take the fight to us. I was not shocked because I was reeling from a nasty divorce finalized September 4, 2001, exactly a week to the day before 9/11. I was already in a state of shock.

In conclusion, he was a CIA operative. He ain't one now.
