Hello, hows it going fellow rollituppers! creating this thread to journal my selection process. also to invite anyone who keeps males or harvests pollen. enjoy and hope we learn something
In a sense they do. They just use several plants to come up with their parents before stabilizing and crossing.Male selection - always an interesting subject.
From everything I've read, it seems that the only real way to know what your males bring to the table is to grow out the crosses.
Of course, the visible traits will tell you something too - and of course you can get the males tested in a lab as well. I don't really recommend trying to do this yourself. I've seen threads about using some basic chemical analysis. I forget the chemicals used but you take a small tissue sample and then do some tests - but basically it's unreliable because you need to ensure the tissue sample is the same width every time. GCG is the best method and if you're in a legal state you should have access. I'd take advantage if you're serious about it as it can and will save you a shit load of time and money in your selection process.
Also, try to avoid 1:1 crosses. Most folks do this. It is not the correct strategy unless you are seriously limited in space.
Chimera's hybrids all contain multiple male and female plants - obviously he choose the ones which best represented the intended goals. Just an example. I'd be surprised if Simon from Serious used 1:1 hybrids as well.
Basically this is done to avoid genetic bottlenecking. It can also help to lower the incidence of bad recessive traits showing up significantly as well.
I mean number of plants.what do you mean 1:1, cbd:thc?
