It is my opinion that Nelson Mandela was, by far, the most respected person on the face of the planet.
Now he has died I cannot think of anyone who even comes close to having a similar degree if respect on an international level.
But, more than this, I cannot think of anyone who is respected internationally who has 10% of the respect that Mandela had.
The Dalai Lama is respected internationally BUT Chinese pressure ensures that heads of state, from every country on earth, exercise restraint in associating with him. Maybe this Chinese made adversity actually adds to his respect?
Aung San Sui Kyee (Myanmar Political Reformer) is also another hugely respected figure.
After decades of repression and house arrest, she is now internationally recognised as a person with the altruism and bravery to remain unchanged by extreme pressure of the governing generals of the nation in which she lived. Myanmar is now on the verge of massive change and Aug San Siu Kyee is a large part of the reason why.
Who do you consider to be internationally respected???
