Yes, i think the absence of inherent meaning in the universe will always pervade the minds of people who want answers to all of the questions in their lives where no definite answer can be found.
I yearn for there to be a god or gods, i yearn to have a feeling of connectedness to a supreme being or entity, i yearn for the comfort of feeling as if these gods have a plan for me. I think these feelings are normal for everyone, the question is... how do we go about handling these desires?
When we search within ourselves and find nothing do we make something up? Do we listen to someone else? Or do we simply accept our state of ignorance and go on living in spite of not having concrete knowledge about all of these questions?
Yes, i think religion will stick with the human animal race until it is wiped out in one fashion or another.
Although it would be nice to see people discontinue killing people over differing opinions...
(I turned 28 today, god damn do i feel old... ugh)

Happy Birthday, ZS! 28, huh? I remember my 20s, awesome time in my life, I'm sure you're enjoying it to the max. I agree, I think many form of magical thinking will continue even as it becomes less mainstream through education. As we know, many people (most that I've encountered) don't believe things based on evidence and reason, but simply because the beliefs comfort them in some manner. Religion doesn't need to be eliminated, just pushed back into the ranks of astrology and the people who think Elvis is still alive...

Could you describe what that feels like?
That's where you get reasonable/unreasonable people. If you can't answer a question like that difinitively, you can't act on it in any definitive way (ie. "this is the ONLY way to heaven!"), and IMO, the people that do are lacking in conviction towards their own belief. If what they believed was actually true, there would be no need for societal pressure to get you to accept it.
Do you mean as an organized entity like it is now, or just small nomadic pockets of believerish cult type people a couple centuries from now?

Also try to remember that the theory of evolution has only been around for about 154 years... and religion has been around for as long as 30,000 years. I think it may take a little more time for people to adjust.

It's a buisness like any other so it will market its self to the people that need it. Just like evolution which is faith based because they haven't found all the evidence yet but they KNOW it's there they just have to find it. So have faith.

I think it will last forever with our species, yes. However, I think the ultimate fate will be when organizations believe that money is what is needed to influence the church/organization. When money is what is pushing faith, we are doomed. I went to a Catholic school for four years in high school, even though I was a methodist, and realized that it felt like something else was driving mass. Not God, or faith, it felt like money pushed the organization and I feel it always has pushed Catholics. True religion is belief and faith, and I think the truest form of "Church" would be one without donations, done on a hillside or in a praire with no money involved. Just a speaker who knows and has studied God in a setting that makes someone a "Pastor" or "Priest." That would get my attention as a Christian. That is when I would start attending a "church." I do not attend organized churches because I just don't believe what some of them are doing is really "just" I am not saying everyone is like that, but take a look at different churches. I have been to MANY churches.
