Every heard of Crisco? Lard? Animal fat is used all the time for a large range of applications. Maybe they were making some of that fine fine chicken fat soap :) Or it could just be the renderings from a chicken processing plant that was on it's way for disposal.

I would go with the HPS over the T5s. You could always just add a few watts of T5 for side lighting though. What did you not like about CFLs?

Or T8s if you wanted to. I run T8s for sidelighting to supplement UV
