well, im not sure but i rekon the plant in pic 1 is a female beacuase the spikes pointing outwards at the branch unions and the plant in pic 2 is a male because of the inverted spikes at the branch unions x

you can grow in that space , but probably only a small number of plants provided their vegged for a small amount of time, probably better to get indica's than sativa's .

looks like it could be a toxic salt build up or very low humidity
